Katie C. Jenkins
BERLIN – Katie C. Jenkins of Berlin died Nov. 4, 2009 at the age of 101 years, at her apartment in the Atlantic Hotel in Berlin after a brief illness.
She was the daughter of the late Charles H. Clark and Iva Maude Clark. She was born in Taylorville on March 1, 1908 and grew up in Ocean City where she witnessed its transformation from a small fishing village to the Mid-Atlantic’s seaside resort.
During that time frame she and her husband, Cullen "Jiggs" S. Jenkins were involved in the ownership of many different businesses in the resort. Her husband of 33 years predeceased her in 1961.
She, along with recently deceased Bert Cropper and three others were in the first graduating class in the new Ocean City High School. She was also in the first graduating class of Salisbury Normal School, now Salisbury University where she graduated as a schoolteacher. She was the first county teacher for a special education class and a founder of the Worcester County Humane Society. She was an active member of the Taylorville United Methodist church. During her lifetime, she was known and remembered as a friend and supporter of the most in need.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy A. "Dottie" Rolfe; a son, Charles R. "Buddy" Jenkins and his wife Laura R. Jenkins; two grandchildren, Virginia L. Jenkins and Judith G. Rolfe; a stepdaughter, Angela C. Cupas; and three great grandchildren, Michael C. Giardina, Matthew C. Giardina and Charles R. Jenkins, III. She is also survived by her special caregiver, Elizabeth Webb, and a special thanks to her dear friend, Dr. Robert Durkin, for his attentive care.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Margaret Clark Aaron and Nellie Clark; her brother, Charles E. Clark; a granddaughter, Joan W. Jenkins; a grandson, Charles R. Jenkins, Jr.; and a son-in-law, John A. Rolfe.
A viewing will be held at Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 from 6-8 pm. A funeral service will be held at the Taylorville United Methodist Church on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009 at 11 a.m. Interment will be private. The family invites friends to join them after the service in the Taylorville Church Fellowship Hall for a reception.

James R. Bergey, Sr.
BERLIN – James R. Bergey, Sr., 75, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Born in Bishopville, he was the son of the late Harry Roy Bergey and Hilda Ryan Bergey. He is survived by his wife, Linda Brown Bergey; two sons, James R. Bergey, Jr., and his wife Betsy of Berlin and Steven J. Bergey; a daughter, Ann B. Taylor and her husband Kenny of Bishopville; grandchildren James Ryan Bergey, III and wife Kristin, Ross A. Bergey, Kyle Davis and R.J. Davis; and one great grandson, James Ryan Bergey IV.
Bergey was a graduate of Buckingham High School and Goldey Beacom Business College.
He had served in the Delaware Army National Guard. His life’s work was Calvin B. Taylor Bank where he served for 55 years in various capacities retiring as Senior Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors. He continued serving Taylor Bank as a member of the Executive Committee. He had been a comptroller and executive vice-president at Ocean Downs Raceway. He was a member and trustee of Wilson United Methodist Church in Bishopville, former Berlin Little League coach, member of the Berlin Lions Club and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed duck hunting, boating and was a sports enthusiast.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wilson United Methodist Church in Bishopville. Rev. Dean Perdue will officiate. Friends may call from one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be at Bishopville Cemetery.

Mildred Ann Sinnamon Humphreys
OCEAN CITY – Mildred Ann Sinnamon Humphreys, 60, of Ocean City, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.
She was born in Salisbury, daughter of the late, William G. and Sarah (Lynch) Sinnamon.
Before her retirement, she worked in the banking industry and helped in her family’s cottage and apartment rental business in West Ocean City.
She dearly loved her friends and was always there to lend a helping hand when needed. Her family, friends, and special pets will sadly miss her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor E. Humphreys in 1997, and brother, William G. Sinnamon, Jr., in 2001.
She is survived by her sister, Hazel Williams and her husband John; four nieces, Teresa Scott, Michele Sinnamon Elliott, Jenna Sinnamon and Belle Goslee; and three nephews, Allen Mumford, Doug Williams and J.H. Williams.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher Street, Frankford, Del. 19945, where friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, 10845 Ocean Gateway, Berlin, Md. 21811.

Roseann M. Bridgman
BERLIN – Roseann M. Bridgman (nee Mulderig) died in Berlin on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009 after a prolonged battle with cancer.
She was born in Coaldale, Pa. on July 24, 1938, and was raised in Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe), Pa. as the oldest child of John and Margaret (Mae) Mulderig. After graduating from MauchChunkCatholicHigh School she moved to Washington, DC where she met and married Alfred F. Bridgman, Jr., then a Lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard. During her husband’s career, Roseann lived all around the country. In 1997, Roseann and Al retired to Ocean Pines.
She was active in Coast Guard Wives Clubs, on both the local and national level. In the Washington DC area, she participated as a volunteer at St. Phillips in Camp Springs, Md. and St. Mary’s in Piscataway, Md., before being hired as the Director of Religious Education at St. Mary’s. After moving to Ocean Pines, she held leadership positions in various organizations, serving as president of the Ocean Pines Women’s Club, the Republican Women of Worcester County, the Worcester County Commission on Women, the Worcester County Veterans Memorial at Ocean Pines and vice president of the Maryland Federation of Republican Women.
She is survived by her husband; her children, Suzanne Riggs, John and Michael; her sister, Mary Swarz; her brothers, Michael, John and James; and eight grandchildren, David, Samantha, Jordan, Shane, Anna Beth, Erin, Kylie and Mia.
A visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 6 from 2-4 p.m. at Community Church of Ocean Pines. Funeral service will be held at Community Church of Ocean Pines on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. Friends may call one hour prior at the church. Internment will follow.

Helen E. Vansant
OCEAN CITY – Helen Elizabeth VanSant, age 75, died Oct. 31, 2009 at home.
Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Arthur Canapp and Catherine Canapp.
She is survived by former husband, Harry Sadtler Nolen, and preceded in death by husbands Roger E. Donegan and Nicholas VanSant. She is survived by a son, Arthur J. Nolen, and preceded in death by a son, Phillip Nolen. She is survived by a grandson, Michael Arthur Nolen, and a great granddaughter, Madison Grace Nolen.
VanSant was a homemaker.

Frances Marion Waterman
OCEAN CITY – Frances M. Waterman died Wednesday, Oct. 28 2009, at home.
Born in New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Frances Grace and Sylvia Matson Grace. She is survived by her husband, William Waterman; two sons, William “Billy” Waterman, II, and Scot Waterman of Ocean City; and a granddaughter, Matson Waterman.

Alan D. Buchanan
OCEAN CITY – Alan Dean Buchanan, age 51, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Atlantic General Hospital.
Born in Salisbury, he was the son of Lawrence Buchanan and Mary Elizabeth Hadder Buchanan.
He is survived by his wife, Leslie Buchanan; a son, James Alan Buchanan; brothers, Larry Buchanan, and wife Joan, of Ocean City, Edward Buchanan and wife Julie of Pittsville and Donald Buchanan of Meadowlands, N.J.: sisters, Alice Phillips of Berlin and Ruth Ann Graham of Salisbury; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Mary Dawn Parsons. Buchanan attended Stephen Decatur High School and was a waterman.
