OC Superintendent Retires
OCEAN CITY – Town of Ocean City Public Works Maintenance Superintendent Bruce Gibbs is retiring after 35 years of employment with the town. His last day on the job will be Oct. 11.
Gibbs began his employment with the town as an Ocean City Police Department patrolman on Nov. 8, 1974. In 1976, he became a K-9 officer until he transferred to the Public Works Department in 1978, where he became a foreman in the Maintenance Division. He was promoted to maintenance foreman in 1987; general foreman in 1990; and in 1996 was promoted to superintendent of maintenance.
As superintendent of maintenance, Gibbs has been responsible for keeping the town’s streets, Boardwalk and beach clean, along with town buildings and offices. Over the years, when coastal storms and other weather forces impacted Ocean City, Gibbs and his staff responded to clean up and restore the community’s public areas.
“Mother Nature has provided many interesting challenges over the years,” Gibbs said.
Gibbs has also managed set-up of the various town-sponsored special events including Sunfest and Springfest, along with other private special events requiring Town assistance. In 1984, Gibbs served as the town’s liaison with Columbia Pictures for the filming of the movie “Violets are Blue.”
Over the course of his career, Gibbs has been involved in many improvements to the town’s operations, including the conversion of the metered system at the Inlet Parking Lot to the ticketed system in place today and the change from street parking meters to the Cale system now in use.
“It has been very rewarding to watch my department grow from the small operation it was to the efficient organization is has become,” Gibbs said.
A 1966 graduate of Stephen Decatur High School, prior to joining the Town of Ocean City, Gibbs served in the United States Coast Guard Reserves. He also worked for the Eastern Shore CATV, Eastern Shore Gas Company, was self employed in the construction business and served as an ambulance driver for the town.
Realtors Join Board
OCEAN CITY – Jay Wise, manager of the Ocean City West Prudential Carruthers Realtors®, has announced that two realtors from his office have been elected to the Coastal Association of Realtors Board of Directors.
Linda A. Moran has been elected to serve a three-year term as a Director for the Coastal Association of Realtors (CAR). A 30-plus year real estate veteran and an 18-year member of the Coastal Board, Linda has served on various CAR committees, including the MLS committee, and is currently chairing the education committee. An active member of Women’s Council of Realtors®, she holds the prestigious GRI® and CRS® designations.
Skip Schlesinger has been elected to the position of secretary of the Board of Directors for CAR. A six-plus year veteran of the resort market, he has served on various CAR committees, including the finance committee, and is currently chairing the MLS committee. A Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist®, he holds the NAR designations of TRC® and RSPS®.

Program Awarded
SALISBURY – The Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program of the Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute at Peninsula Regional Medical Center was recently awarded recertification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).
“Recertification reflects that our program meets national standards to ensure quality care, consistency in the delivery of services, evidence of tracking clinical outcomes and program operational standards in compliance with AACVPR Program Guidelines, JCAHO and Medicare regulations,” said Pamela Caldwell, RN, BSN, Director of the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. “This is a three-year certification for both programs.”
This program was first certified by AACVPR in 1999, with this being the third recertification for both programs. Individuals who participate in the Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Program are typically those scheduled for and following open-heart surgery, who have recently been diagnosed with coronary artery disease, those who have undergone an interventional procedure for coronary disease and those at risk for the development of coronary artery disease.
Physician Honored
BERLIN – Dr. Danielle Orr, a family practice physician at Atlantic General Health System’s Ocean Pines Primary Care and Women’s Health, was recently honored with a Patients’ Choice recognition.
This recognition is collected from a variety of online resources designed to rate physicians, among them Vitals.com, RightHealth.com, and Google.com. Patients are able to rate a physician on various components such as bedside manner, doctor-patient face time, degree of follow-up, courtesy of office staff, and overall opinion. In 2008, only five percent of 720,000 active physicians were recognized with this honor
Orr recently joined the medical staff as a primary care provider for the Atlantic General Health System. Orr is a graduate of the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va., where she served as an executive member of the student government. After graduation, she completed a residency at Reading Hospital and Medical Center in Reading, Pa. Orr is a member of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians. She will provide care at the Ocean Pines Primary Care office on Racetrack Road.
Flu Clinic Sets Record
SALISBURY – Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s recent Drive-Thru Flu Clinic at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury on Thursday, Oct. 1 and Friday, Oct. 2 set a record for the number of people vaccinated for the seasonal flu during the event.
At this year’s event, Peninsula Regional nurses administered 6,740 adult vaccinations to people 18 and above and 233 pediatric vaccinations others to those between the age of 13 and 17 for a grand total of 6,973 vaccinations. That number is the largest amount in the 16-year history of the Medical Center’s Drive-Thru Flu Clinic.
New Director Named
SALISBURY — The Life Crisis Center, a local 501(c) nonprofit organization that serves as the lead agency on domestic emergency assistance on the shore, has named Demetra Copeland as the director of sexual assault services.
Copeland focuses her clinical practice on adult victims of rape, sexual assault and incest. In addition to individual counseling, support groups and anger management groups, Copeland oversees sexual assault outreach, community education and coordinates the activities of Sexual Assault Awareness month, including “Take Back the Night” held at Salisbury University.
Copeland joined the LCC clinical staff in 2002 as a therapist for sexual assault victims. Michele Hughes, executive director of LCC, envisions Copeland identifying methods that will offer smoother communication among law enforcement, the courts and treatment agencies.
“She has outstanding credentials and a thorough understanding of the process that someone goes through when they are assaulted, including the flow between different reporting and follow up agencies. Knowing that 1 in 4 women will be raped, we recognize how Dee’s expertise can improve the lives of rape victims. To that end, we have moved her office to our downtown location for walk-ins,” explained Hughes.

New Records Office Opens
SALISBURY – Peninsula Regional Medical Center and its Health Information Management (HIM) department announce the opening of a new Medical Records Satellite Office on the first floor of the Medical Center.
The new Medical Records Satellite Office provides customers an easy to access location where they may obtain copies of their medical record. It’s staffed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and located just off the Same Day Surgery/Labor & Delivery Entrance on Vine Street.
Customers must present photo identification at the time of pick up and request copies of their medical record in advance so they are available at the office.
