Thanks For Successful Tour

Editor:

On behalf of the Art League of Ocean City, I would like to thank the community for supporting the 5th Annual Sand Castle Home Tour. The purpose of this event is to raise funds for a visual art center that can accommodate the many art and cultural programs and activities for our residents and visitors. The art league is a private non-profit organization, the vast majority of whose funding comes from the people of our community.

This year’s tour was our biggest success yet and would not have been possible without the tremendous efforts of so many.

We are most appreciative to our honorary chairwoman Eunice Sorin who truly embodies the spirit of giving and understands the importance of having art and culture in a community. Eunice’s donation validates the need for such a center, and we are grateful to her.

The 10 homeowners who opened their doors to the tour takers were gracious and accommodating. Thank you to the Wainwright, Kendall, O’ Brien, Curtis, Dypsky, Gillis, McCabe, Bivens, Wimbrow and Zimmer families.

The small committee who worked so hard on this event for the past year are to be commended as well: Barbara Melone, Katy Durham, Betty Stork, Nancy Howard, Lyn Burr, Jennifer Albright, Marcy Thiele, Jamie Albright, Rebecca Galyon, Merilee Horvat, Jackie Windrow, Gail Scheiber, Kim Wagner and myself.

The local florists who donated beautiful arrangements were Bethany Florist, Ocean Greeenery, City Florists, Flowers by Alison, Phil Cropper, Village Greens, Worcester County Garden Club, Ocean City Florists and Kitty’s Flowers.

Thanks also goes to the many local businesses and individuals who placed ads and donated money to the tour. Two fabulous parties were presented by Antipasti Ristorante and Leighton Moore.

Of course, the event would not have been possible without the over 250 locals who volunteered time to be a docent in the homes and the 1,000 people who participated in the tour.

In addition to being a vehicle for raising funds for an art center, this tour has evolved into a cultural event for our town, and as you can see it is truly a community effort.

An Uplifting Moment

For Person In Need

Editor:

At a time when many of us are feeling the effects of the economic downturn, we occasionally stumble onto to something that puts a whole new spin on life. I thought I would commit my encounter in writing and forward it you in the hope you will include it in your very informative publication.

The other day I had occasion to speak with someone who had the wonderful experience of receiving assistance from one of our community’s dedicated organizations, Diakonia.

Without going into too many details, suffice it to say that this individual experienced one of the most tragic events one could possibly experience in life – being homeless. This occurred along with the loss of employment and other devastating events.

Diakonia, the organization in West Ocean City dedicated to providing shelter, food, clothing and other services to the homeless, was the difference in this particular case. Not only did it provide shelter and food during this difficult time it allowed time for obtaining new employment and basically a new start.

We are fortunate that we have such an organization here in Delmarva, and I would urge tour readers to consider them as a benefactor when providing financial aid or perhaps goods and services. They sure have demonstrated that they know how to turn gifts into benefits for those in need.

Many thanks for “listening” to my story.
