Decatur Falls to Easton in Opener

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s young men’s varsity soccer team got a good lesson in finishing this week, falling to host Easton, 4-2, in the season opener after leading 2-0 early in the contest.

Decatur is very young, but also very talented this year with just four seniors on the roster and a whole flock young Seahawks ready to step up and make their mark on the successful program. Seniors Dylan Post, Joey Lertora, C.J. Mitchell and Ryan Davis provide Decatur with veteran leadership at almost all positions on the field with a strong core of juniors and sophomores filling in the ranks.

On Tuesday, Decatur traveled to Easton for the season opener and got off to a good start before the Warriors regrouped and eventually prevailed. Post scored two early goals to stake the Seahawks to a 2-0 lead before Easton got on the board with 7:30 left in the first half to cut the lead to 2-1, which is how the first half ended.

The score remained 2-1 for much of the second half before Easton tied it a 2-2 with a goal around the eight-minute mark. Less than a minute later, the Warriors scored again to take their first lead of the game and added a fourth goal in the final minute to pull away for the 4-2 win.

The Seahawks attempted to regroup with the home opener yesterday against Kent Island in a game played too late to be included in this edition. They face North Caroline on the road and Queen Anne’s at home next week.
