Charles Winston Shock, Sr.

OCEAN PINES – Charles Winston (Winnie) Shock, Sr., 57, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord on Friday, July 24, 2009 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was the husband of Kathy Anne (Halterman) Shock. He is also survived by his children, Shawn R. Stauch of Bastrop, Texas and his family, Kathy L. Jackson of Glen Rock, Pa. and her family, and Christopher Conner of Ocean Pines. He is also survived by two sisters, Sharon Hollingshead of Bluefied, Va. and Angela Pifer of Dover, Pa., seven grandchildren, two great grandsons and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Shock of White Hall, Md., and his infant twin sister, Mary Roberta Shock, and Frances Eileen Shock of Baltimore.

Following cremation, a celebration of life for him will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Community Church of Ocean Pines, officiated by his good friend and pastor Dr. P. Thomas McKelvey. Interment will be in the Garden of the Pines.

After years of working in the banking industry in North Carolina and Miami, he worked 11 years for L. Levetan and Sons, York, Pa. in the metal recycling business. He was a supervisor at Rabbit Transit in York, Pa. up until his illness in 2001. During his fight with this illness, he participated in numerous protocols at Johns Hopkins that would expand knowledge available for the treatment of cancer.

He and his wife were married on the beach in Ocean City in 1999 and later moved to the area in 2002. He was a member of the Community Church of Ocean Pines where he served

on the multi-media ministry, worship team, occasionally the church band and briefly on the Church Council.

John Elmon Veader

OCEAN PINES – John Elmon "Jack" Veader, of Ocean Pines died peacefully on July 31, 2009 after a brief illness.

He was born on Sept. 6, 1924 in Massillon, Ohio, the only son of Elmon F. and Helen S. Veader. He was predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Mary Jane, Carol and Nannette.

He grew up in Massillon, Ohio, then moved to Charleston, W.Va. where he attended and graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1942. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps (USAF) and served during the war as a bombadier. He attended West Virginia University (WVU), graduating in 1948 with a BS and in 1949 with an MS in Education. While at WVU, he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. It was also at WVU where he met and fell in love with his

future wife, Elizabeth "Jody" Comstock.

During his nearly 30 years in education, he taught math and coached basketball at Southern High School in Oakland, Md., math at Golden Ring Junior HS in Baltimore County and then served as a guidance counselor and pupil personnel worker for the county schools until his retirement in 1977.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jody; his daughters, Chris Turcotte and her husband, Jack of Arundel, Maine, and Susan Hall and her husband, John, of Lewes, Delaware; his sons, John and his wife Leslie, of Bentonville, Ark. and Rick and his wife, Janet, of Baltimore; and numerous grandchildren.

Arrangements have been made through the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. It was his request that no memorial service be held and he will be laid to rest near his parents and sister in the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Baltimore.

Mary Norma Rau

BERLIN – Mary Norma Rau, 83, died at the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Baltimore, she is daughter of the late John Patrick Dignan and Elizabeth Grauer Dignan. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles E. Rau in 1995. She is survived by two sons, Charles B. Rau and his wife Linda of Berlin and John P. Rau and his wife Edna of Rising Sun; four grandsons; and great grand children.

Services were held at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Mary Alice Liston

OCEAN PINES – Mary Alice Liston, 65, passed peacefully on July 30, 2009. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Carl William Sheekley and Alice Marie Ryan Sheekley.

She spent many successful years as the owner of MSL Career Consultants where she helped many people realize their careers. Later, she was a writer and editor who investigated trends in the power industry for I.O. Energy in Rosslyn, Va. 

Her years of retirement in Ocean City were a dream come true and she and her husband were able to enjoy many of their shared hobbies – whether it was “helping” him fish or exploring an antique store nestled away in a nearby town they just discovered. Over the years, friends and families were enriched by her passions, like her love of the beach, appreciation for art and her ability to make every occasion special. She delighted in her grandsons and never failed to share their exploits.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years David Liston; daughter, Jennifer and her husband Kevin Rodgers; grandchildren, Kevin, David and Michael Rodgers; sister Chris and her husband Brian Downey and their children Lauren and Ryan Downey; and sister Betsy McNabb and her children Christopher and Emily Metzger. She was predeceased by her sister Annie Sheekley.

A memorial service will be held at Burbage Funeral Home Friday Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. Visitation will be one hour prior. A mass will be held Saturday Aug. 8 at St John Neumann Catholic Church at 11 a.m.

Jean Truss Smith

BERLIN – Jean Truss Smith, 85, of Berlin, died July 30, 2009 at her home in River Run.

Born in Wilmington, Del. on Sept. 12, 1923, she was a daughter of the late James P. and Ethel R. Truss and older sister to Joan Truss Bacon. 

She was a homemaker and loving mother to her surviving children, James Thompson Smith, Jr., Richard Riddle Smith and Margaret Truss Spurlock. 

She was a devoted wife to her surviving husband of 62 years, James T. Smith, Sr. Also surviving are daughters-in-law Karen E. Smith and Jennifer F. Smith and son-in-law Fred Spurlock. She was pleased to have four grandchildren, Greer D. Smith, Jordan T. Spencer, James T. Smith, III and Charles H. Smith. Grandson-in-law Scott Spencer also survives. Nieces Abigail Hobbie, Susan Dynerman and nephew Alfred E. Bacon, Jr. survive.

She and her husband Jim lived around the country, first with the US Navy and then with Magnavox Government and Industrial Electronics.

A service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Berlin on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 1 p.m. A private memorial is being planned for the Navy Columbarium in Annapolis.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Coastal Hospice.

Malcolm G. Heggie

OCEAN PINES – Malcolm G. Heggie, age 84, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2009 of lung complications.

Born on May 9, 1925 in Lynn, Mass., he was the son of the late Charles E. Heggie and Bessie Brown Heggie.

Heggie was a FBI agent from December 1951 to 1979. He was assigned to FBI offices in Detroit, Mich., Miami, Fla., St. Louis, Mo. and Washington, DC.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Charlotte (Sally) Heggie; a daughter, Linda Payne of High Bridge, N.J.; four grandchildren; and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Heggie.

Services and interment are private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Robert G. Harrington

WILLARDS – Robert G. Harrington, age 85, died on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Alexandria, Va., he was the son of the late Dr. John S. Harrington and Stella Schreiner Harrington. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ann Harrington.

 Harrington attended the United States Maritime Service Officers School, Fort Trumbull, New London, Conn. During WWII, he was a Lieutenant (J.G.) United States Coast Guard. He served from Dec. 7, 1941Aug. 15, 1945.

Along with his wife, he is survived by three sons, Robert F. of Key West, Fla., James E. of Delaware and Thomas J. of Cooksville, Md.; three daughters, Anne Luke of Willards, Maureen Cathell of Berlin and Kathleen Porterfield of Athens, Tenn.; two sisters, Joan Gateau of Annapolis and Jane Eaton of Wheaton; two brothers, Jeremiah F. of Hyattsville and J. Donald of Silver Spring; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Shirley R. Ellis

OCEAN CITY – Shirley R. Ellis, 79, of Ocean City, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin. She was born in Baltimore and was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Miller Goldstraw.

She was a retired clerk with the former C&P Telephone Co. and was a member of the Telecom Pioneers.

She is survived by one daughter, Barbara A. Moffitt of Deal Island; two step-daughters, Jill Demetry and Kim Ellis, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Ronald Goldstraw of Severna Park; and a grandson, Cody Necessary.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elwood Ellis in 1990.

Lois Ann Williams

BERLIN – Lois Ann Williams, age 69, died Aug. 3, 2009 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Born on Nov. 11, 1939 in Berlin, she was the daughter of the late Isaac T Griffin and Mary Etta Rodney Griffin.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, knitting and doing needlework. She also enjoyed camping and was an active member of the Salisbury Baptist Temple.

Surviving in addition to her husband, Dan Franklin Williams, Sr., are a son, Dan F. Williams Jr., and companion Edward E. Pike Jr. of Berlin; a daughter, Joanne Williams Richardson and husband Roland of North Carolina; a sister, Vivian Littleton of Berlin; two granddaughters; and one great granddaughter.
