Edward Leo Wisniewski

BERLIN – Edward Leo Wisniewski, age 89, died on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at his home in Berlin.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Thief and Julia Rutkoustra Wisniewski.

Wisniewski entered the US Navy in July, 1938 and served until his discharge in 1945. While in the Navy, he served in the Naval Combat Demolition team, which is the predecessor to the modern day Navy SEALs.

Wisniewski was Past President of the Long Shoreman Local #829, owner of Sherry’s Inn in Locus Point, Md., and owner of Golden Gate Condo Building #3 in Ocean City.

He is survived by his wife, Alice L. Wisniewski; a daughter, Sharon L. Taylor; a brother, Leo Wisniewski; and his loving dogs especially, Ticket, Chance, the new CHP Maggie Lee.

Interment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Jane Marie Wallen
BERLIN – Jane Marie Wallen, 37, a life-long resident of Penns Grove, died
Friday, July 24, at her home in Berlin.

She was a beloved mother, daughter, sister and companion who tested the conventions of life and rose to meet many challenges. She was generous, loving and adventurous and she will be deeply missed by the many people who had been touched by her during her too short life.

She is survived by her children, Darby Smith of Pennsville, George Bradway of Berlin and Daniel Gresk of Franklinville. She will be deeply missed by her partner John Rinkus and is also survived by parents, Herbert C. Wallen, Jr. and his wife, Ann Smith of Carneys Point, and Edna P. Chew and her husband, Richard Chew of Penns Grove. She also leaves behind five sisters, Bessie Smith of Carneys Point, Patricia Price of Mannington, Theresa Vanderslice of Ocala, Fla., Jacqueline Mauro of Milville, and Shannon Smith of Penns Grove, and a brother, Herbert Wallen, III of Elmer. She was the beloved "me mom" of grandson Bruce Nelson of Pennsville.

Steven Aaron Russell

TEMPERANCEVILLE, Va. – Steven Aaron Russell, age 56, died on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born in Lewes, Del., he was the son of

Doris Powell Russell of Berlin and the late Joseph W. Russell. He is survived by his wife, Barbara "Bobbi" Russell.

Russell was a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School. He was self employed and had worked in construction and renovations, both residential and commercial. He was a member of the Lower Eastern Shore Moose Lodge, Accomack Elks Lodge, and was a 20-year member of the Eagle Ridge Band and the Country High Band and a long-standing member of AMSA.

Along with his wife and mother, he is survived by five daughters, Tammy Boston and her husband Rodney of Berlin, Barbara Lee Rago-Rios and her husband Joseph of California, Kristeen Tracey of California, Tracie Murphy of Crewe, Va. and Payton Olugbala of Las Vegas; one sister, Judith Baker of Berlin; nephew, T.C. of Pittsville; 13 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Westover Moose Lodge on Lankford Highway, Westover, Md. on Sunday, Aug. 2 at 1 p.m. Arrangements by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Charles Curtis Hitch

SNOW HILL – Charles Curtis Hitch, age 79, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at Lakeside Assisted Living at Mallard Landing in Salisbury.

Born in Snow Hill, he was the son of the late Curtis T. Hitch and Virginia Harris Hitch. He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Hitch.

Hitch was a graduate of Snow Hill High School. He was a United States Air Force veteran. He attended Goldey Beacom College in Wilmington, Del. He worked for many years as an accountant with Moore Business Forms. He was a man of great faith and a lifelong Christian. He loved gardening, baseball and softball and formerly coached in the Snow Hill Little League. He was a member of Spence Baptist Church where he was a Deacon. Hitch was also a member of the Lions Club and the American Legion.

Along with his wife he is survived by two sons, Keith A. Hitch, Sr. and his

wife Linda and Michael C. Hitch, Sr. and his wife Barbara; five grandchildren, Keith Hitch, Jr., Evan Hitch, Erica Hitch, Michael Hitch, Jr. and David Hitch; one great grandchild, Makenzie Hitch; amd lifetime companion, his dog Molly. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Turton.

Services were held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Spence Church Elevator Fund, 7603 Spence Church Rd., Snow Hill, Md. 21863. Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Arduino Demenico D’Orazio

BERLIN – Arduino Demenico D’Orazio, 92, died July 18. He was born in Gessopalena, Italy to the late Camillo and Felicia Pellicciotta D’Orazio.

He immigrated to the United States in 1955 and was a taylor by trade in Washington DC and owned a Taylor shop-D’Orazio Taylor Shop.

 He is survived by his grandson, Paul Anthony Javornik and wife Renee; a great grand-daughter, Alexis Renee Javornik; a great grand-son, Anthony William Javornik of Plano, Texas; and a niece, Anna D’Orazio of Washington, DC. Arduino was preceded in death by wife Maddalena D’Orazio and daughter Phyllis Loredana D’Orazio Javornik.

Services were held. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home.

Mordecai Ellsworth Buckingham, Jr.

BERILN – Mordecai Ellsworth Buckingham, Jr., 85, died July 26, 2009 surrounded by his family.

He was born Aug. 10, 1923 in Baltimore, the eldest of six children born to Eleanor and Mordecai E. Buckingham, Sr.

For close to 50 years, Buckingham worked as superintendant of plant maintenance and purchasing agent for the Maryland Glass Corporation and Chattanooga Glass Company. He was also the president of the Glass Blowers Association, Local 56, for over 20 years.

Buckingham was a decorated WWII veteran, having earned the Purple Heart and other medals during the liberation of France and Belgium. For most of his life following the war, he was an active member of the VFW and the American Legion.

Another civic organization to which Buckingham belonged was the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks. From 1985 to 1986, he served as the Exalted Ruler of the Elks, Lodge 140, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

Buckingham is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara; two sons, Mordecai and David; five grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, David, Jason, Lesley; one great-grandson, Christopher; and his brother, Jack.

Funeral services will be held at Singleton Funeral Home in Glen Burnie, Md. on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. with interment at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge, Md. Calling hours are Friday, July 31, 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

George A. Groth

OCEAN PINES – George A. Groth, 80, died July 28, 2009.

He was born in Queens N.Y. to the late Adolf and Katharina Rapp Groth.
He retired from his career as an electrical engineer after 45 years with General Instrument.

He was an avid golfer, boasting a 13 hole-in-one record. He was a Mr. Fix-it and also a car buff. As an animal lover, he will be missed by his dog Bud and his six cats, too numerous to name.

He is survived by his wife, Gini Tufts Groth; son, Davis and wife Charro Groth; son, Mark and wife Kristel Groth; grandson, Davis Groth Jr.; granddaughter, Claudia Berastain; his brother, Carl and wife Mary Groth; and "daughter" Jan and husband Cale Layton.

A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, Aug. 9 at 1:30 p.m. at the Community Church at Ocean Pines on Route 589. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Coastal Hospice, P. O. Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802. Arrangements are being handled by Burbage Funeral Home

William W. Rogers

MILLSBORO, Del. – William W. “Bill” Rogers, 92, of Rehoboth Beach, Del., formerly of Dagsboro, Del., passed away on Sunday, July 26th at home.

Rogers was born on July 27, 1916 in Dagsboro, Del. to the late Walter L. and Lizzie Donaway Rogers.

Rogers retired from the Wilmington Trust Company, Georgetown Branch as a Treasurer. He was a U.S. Army World War II Veteran landing at Normandy with the “Big Red 1” as a radio operator. SGT Rogers received the Bronze Star under battle conditions and was a former member of the V.F.W. He loved to fish and hunt and he was an avid reader. Rogers was an excellent husband, loving father, and he had an incredible sense of humor to the very end.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Idella Rogers; two daughters, Bonita R. Millman and husband Terry of Rehoboth Beach and Valerie L. Bradford and husband John P. Jr. of Millsboro; three grandchildren, Jennifer E. Burgess and husband Jeff Heath, April L. McGinnis and husband Lawrence, and Heather L. Bradford; a great grandson Tristan McGinnis; and several nieces, nephews, and friends. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Emma Mae Joines and Reba Rogers.

Services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 31 at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro, Del. where friends may call at Noon. Rev. Wallace Powell will officiate the service. Interment with honors will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Robert V. Layfield

BERLIN – Robert V. Layfield, 88, of Millsboro, Del., passed away on July 21, 2009 at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Layfield was born on July 14, 1921 in Dagsboro, Del. to the late Orville and Viola Mears Layfield.

He was co-owner of Mitchell & Sons, Inc. in Millsboro. Layfield was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II serving in North Africa and Italy Campaigns.  He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Millsboro, served as Mayor of Millsboro multiple terms during the 1970’s, and served on the Town Council for several years. Layfield loved to serve people, put others first, make people happy, and he was a determined man. 

Layfield is survived by his wife of 65 years, Grace M. Layfield; son, Reginald M. Layfield and wife Donna of Millsboro; daughter, Deborah A. Ware; and husband Les of Hampton, Va.; three grandchildren, Mark B. Hall of Mathews, Va., Jennifer L. Ware of Arlington, Va., and U.S. Army Capt Andrew M. Ware of Savannah, Ga.; and two great grandchildren, D. Grace Hall and Eileen B. Hall.  A daughter, Dolores D. Hall, preceded him in death in 1984.

Services were held. In lieu of flowers the family asks for contributions to a charity of choice in memory of Robert Layfield.
