OCEAN CITY- The 9th Annual Longboard Team Challenge on Saturday on the beach at the Castle in the Sand on 37th Street will be the centerpiece of a host of event all weekend at different venues around the resort celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Ocean City chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.

The Ocean City Surfrider Foundation, formed in 1999, turns 10 this year and the local group is celebrating with a variety of events in the ocean and on the land starting today, Friday, June 5, and continuing through Sunday. The main event is the 9th Annual Longboard Team Challenge on the beach at the Castle in the Sand tomorrow morning beginning at 8 a.m. Sixteen teams from all over the country will compete for the perpetual Tiki Trophy in a contest that will last all day with other beach activities including giveaways and radio remotes.

In addition to the longboard competition, attendees will get the opportunity to demo the Meyerhoffer, the hottest new surfboard on the market. Designed by world famous industrial designer Thomas Meyerhoffer, the new board fuses short- and long-board elements for a more responsive, faster surfboard that is easier to use for beginners. The Meyerhoffer design has just recently been launched and is available in local surf shops.

However, before the 10th Annual Longboard Team Challenge tomorrow, the Surfrider Foundation’s celebration of its 10th anniversary gets underway in earnest today with several events planned. Starting at noon today, the Surfrider Foundation will present a stand-up paddleboard demonstration on the beach at the Castle in the Sand on 37th Street.

On Friday night, the Ocean City chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will celebrate its 10th anniversary in grand style with a party at Castaways on 64th Street. The event starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. and will feature no cover, a food spread, drink specials, a membership drive, a movie screening and music by a DJ.

The weekend-long celebration continues early Saturday morning with the 9th Annual Longboard Team Challenge beginning at 8 a.m. On Saturday night, the Surfrider Foundation will host a contest party, again at Castaways, beginning at 7 p.m. Among other things, the contest party will feature the popular surf sound band The Diamondheads.

Finally, on Sunday, the weekend-long celebration of the Ocean City chapter of the Surfrider Foundation concludes with an open surf at the Castle in the Sand on 37th Street from dawn until noon. The last day’s event is an open surf expression soul session, providing a fitting end to the weekend’s festivities.
