BERLIN- Decatur’s varsity baseball team wrapped up a perfect regular season with a 15-1 shellacking of county rival Pocomoke last Thursday and earned the top seed in the state Class 3A East playoffs when the brackets were unveiled on Wednesday.

The Seahawks ran the table in the regular season, which concluded last week with a 15-1 win over Pocomoke. Lucan Koenig was strong on the mound for Decatur as the starter and Josh Tyndall came in and struck out five in two innings of relief. Jarrett Widgeon led the Seahawks onslaught at the plate with four RBIs on two hits. Tyndall and Paul Stortini also collected two hits in the regular season finale.

The Seahawks finished the regular season unbeaten, their only close call coming in a come-from-behind win over Parkside two weeks ago in the their last at-bat. Otherwise, Decatur was dominating all year and was rarely tested. The Seahawks were scheduled to play Colonel Richardson in the Bayside Conference title game on Wednesday, but the contest was washed out and rescheduled for late yesterday. The game was played too late to be included in this edition.

While it is uncertain if the Seahawks won the Bayside championship yesterday afternoon, what is known is where Decatur goes from here. The Seahawks were rewarded for the perfect regular season with the number-one seed in the state Class 3A East region tournament, which gets underway today.

Decatur received a first-round bye and will play the winner of the game between eighth-seeded Bel Air and ninth-seeded Meade. The second round game is slated for Monday. Lurking on the other side of Decatur’s bracket is fourth-seeded Reservoir. Fallston is the number-two seed in the 3A-East region, while Atholton is seeded third. As long as they continue to win, the Seahawks will play at home until they reach the region finals.
