BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity lacrosse team got its season off to a good start on Tuesday with an 11-3 win over Bayside rival Parkside thanks to a quick burst of offense to start the second half after a sluggish first 25 minutes of play.

The Seahawks did put pressure on the Rams’ goal in the first half, but trailed early and didn’t score until just over five minutes remained in the period. Parkside, however, got off to a good start, scoring first at the 14:47 mark of the first half to take a 1-0 lead. Parkside scored again about six minutes later with a goal at the 9:05 mark to extend the lead to 2-0.

Decatur’s Leann Flounlacker finally got the Seahawks on the board with 5:40 remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 2-1. Flounlacker scored again with 2:33 remaining to tie the score at 2-2, which is how the first half ended.

If there was any doubt about Decatur’s ability to score on the Rams’ stingy defense, it was erased during a quick sequence to start the second half that saw the Seahawks score four goals in a matter of five minutes. Nicole Dougan got the barrage started with a goal just over one minute into the second half to give Decatur its first lead of the game at 3-2. About 14 seconds later, Taylor Blazer found the back of the net to extend the lead to 4-2.

Olivia Turner got in the act with a goal at the 21:45 mark to extend the lead to 5-2. Just over a minute later, Turner assisted on a goal by Flounlacker to complete the game-settling sequence. For Flounlacker, it was her third goal of the game. Decatur’s Alyssa Hardesty scored again at the 19:36 mark to push the lead to 7-2 and there was no looking back for the Seahawks.

The score remained 7-2 for a long stretch before Blazer scored again for the Seahawks to extend the lead to 8-2. Parkside finally got back on the scoreboard in the second half with 8:24 remaining in the game to cut the lead to 8-3, but that was as close as the Rams would get. Turner added her second goal of the game with 3:13 remaining on the clock, while Blazer added her third of the game with just under two minutes remaining. Decatur’s Kristin Miller added the icing on the cake with the final goal of the game as time expired to extend the lead to 11-3.
