Decatur Sweeps Bayside Titles

BERLIN- Less than a week after sweeping the Bayside Conference championships, the Stephen Decatur boys’ and girls’ varsity indoor track teams made a strong showing in the state Class 3A East region meet this week, with the girls’ team winning a regional title and the boys finishing a solid fifth.

Last week, the Seahawk indoor track teams won their respective Bayside Conference championships held at the Worcester County Recreation Center in Snow Hill. The girls, led by a strong showing in the distance races and the field events, came out on top in total team points with 110 total points, easily eclipsing second-place Bennett, which finished with 86.5 points. The Decatur boys’ team also won the Bayside championship, finishing with 97.5 points to second-place Kent Island’s 86.5.

As his been the case all year, the strength for the Seahawk girls in the conference championship meet were the distant races. For example, in the 3,200-meter race, Decatur took first, second, and third place with Lindsay Chetelat, Lauren Cosgriff and Elizabeth Davidson out in front. In the 1,600-meter race, it was Chetelat finishing second, with Cosgriff third and Erin McGuire fourth. In the girls’ 800, Katherine Janson finished second, followed by Chetelat in fourth and Cosgriff in fifth.

The Decatur girls’ finished strong in the field events at the Bayside championships with Jessica Ames taking first in the pole vault and Tiara Stanley finishing first in the shot put. Katherine Janson took second in the girls’ 500-meter race while Lindsey Miller took sixth in the girls’ 300. The Seahawks girls were also strong in the relays, winning the 4×800, finishing third in the 4×400 and fourth in the 4×200. Trimona Bryant finished fourth in the girls’ 55 hurdles.

On the boys’ side in the Bayside championships, Decatur finished first after a strong across-the-board showing in almost all events. Cordonte Ayres had a great meet, finishing first in the boys’ 55-hurdles and second in the 300. Jimmy Leighton took sixth in the 300 and third in the 500, while Joey Letora took fifth in the 500 and Cameron Campbell took sixth in the 800.

Decatur’s Mitch Witherow also had a big day at Baysides, finishing second in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600. James Wells took fourth place in the 55 hurdles, while the Decatur team did well in the relays, taking first in the 4×200, second in the 4×400 and fourth in the 4×800. Like the girls, the Seahawk boys were strong in the field events at Baysides, with Alex Hooks taking second in the high jump, Emanuel Smith taking second in the shot put, Matt Allenbaugh taking second in the pole vault and Bradley Hollowell tying for third in the pole vault.

After sweeping the Bayside titles, the Decatur teams stayed on a roll in the state Class 3A-East regionals with the girls winning their regional title and the boys finishing fifth among the 12 teams in the field. The girls finished with 57 total team points, just one ahead of second-place Lackey. Again, it was Chetelat and the distance runners leading the way. Chetelat finished first in the 1,600 while Cosgriff finished eighth. In the 3,200, it was Chetelat winning again with Davidson finishing eighth.

In the relays, the Decatur girls took first in the 4×800, sixth in the 4×200 and eighth in the 4×400. Bradley Janson took fifth in the 500 and Katherine Janson took sixth in the 800. Decatur’s Tiara Stanley won the shot put event, while Jessica Ames finished second in the pole vault and Lydia Logan took fourth. Decatur’s Tyesha Dale took sixth in the high jump.

The Decatur boys also had a strong showing in the regionals, finishing fifth with 32 team points. Ayres finished sixth in the 55 and fifth in the 300. Witherow did well again, finishing fifth in the 1,600 and eighth in the 3,200. Allenbaugh finished first in the pole vault and Hollowell came in third.
