BERLIN- Tuesday’s bad weather wreaked havoc on the local prep sports schedule up and down the shore, causing cancellations and postponements sending area athletic directors scrambling to find open dates for make-up games.

Light snow fell over Worcester County Tuesday morning and into the afternoon, causing schools to close two hours early and forcing the cancellation of all after-school activities including a full slate of high school sports action. For example, Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team was scheduled to host county rival Snow Hill on Tuesday, but the game was moved to the next day, Wednesday, forcing the Seahawks to play back-to-back games on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Seahawks entered the week with a 1-12 record, their latest loss coming last Friday to Crisfield. Chase Furst led Decatur with nine points in the losing effort. Before that, the Seahawks dropped a close one to Cambridge-South Dorchester, 65-62, last Wednesday.

The Decatur girls’ varsity basketball team was scheduled to play Snow Hill on the road on Tuesday, but that contest was also postponed by the weather and has been moved to tonight at 7 p.m. The Seahawks beat Snow Hill, 39-37, in the Coleman Tournament back on December 30 for their first win of the year.

Since starting the season 0-9, the Seahawks have shown signs of improvement and now stand at 3-13. In their last contest, the Seahawks beat Crisfield, 43-13, behind a 12-point effort by Shay Shockley. They have now won two of the last four and three of their last seven. The Tuesday cancellation also forced the girls to play back-to-back games with Parkside on the road last night in a game played too late to be included in this edition, followed by another road game against Snow Hill tonight.

Tuesday’s inclement weather also forced the cancellation of Decatur’s varsity swimming team’s meet against Cambridge-South Dorchester, which has not been rescheduled, although the Seahawks do have another regularly scheduled date with the Vikings set for next Thursday. In the meantime, Decatur’s swimming team was scheduled to face Kent Count last night and will compete in a dual meet with Kent Island and Queen Anne’s on Tuesday before facing Cambridge-South Dorchester next Thursday.

Tuesday’s snow did not affect Worcester Prep’s sports schedules as the Mallards are currently in the midst of winter break. Both the Worcester boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams get back in action on Monday with a double header on the road against Salisbury Christian. Both teams will play at home next Wednesday on Senior Night.
