SALISBURY- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team lost a tough one last weekend, falling to Thurgood Marshall High of New York, 60-40, in the opening round of the National High School Coaches Association Holiday Basketball Festival in Salisbury.

Formerly known as the Lion’s Club Holiday Classic, the tournament featured 39 of the top high school programs in five states including several from the Bayside Conference. The NHSCA Holiday Classic has grown from humble beginnings to become a showcase for high school basketball talent in recent years. It used to pit the top teams from the Bayside Conference in Maryland against some of the better programs in the Henlopen Conference in Delaware, but the field was expanded to include schools from other areas of the mid-Atlantic region.

Decatur started off with a tough match-up against Thurgood Marshall High, out of New York, last Saturday, and although the outcome wasn’t entirely positive, the Seahawks were very much in the game before a scoring drought in the fourth quarter. Decatur fell behind early in the contest and trailed at the half, but the Seahawks actually outscored Thurgood Marshall, 18-15, in the third quarter. However, Decatur could not sustain the intensity it showed during the third quarter and suffered the 20-point loss. The Seahawks played Sussex Tech of Delaware in the second round on Tuesday in a game played too late to be included in this edition.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks notched their first win of the year last Tuesday, topping Kent Island, 57-44, to get off the snide this early season after several defeats. Andrew Brickey led the Seahawks with 16 points, while Tre Foreman pitched in 14.
