William Alton McCarthy

BERLIN – William Alton McCarthy died on Dec. 5, 2008 after a brief illness at his home in Towson.

Born in Pimlico, Md., he was the son of Frank DeSales McCarthy and Elizabeth Ludwig McCarthy. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald McCarthy; sister, Ethel McCarthy Meyer; and sister, Mary McCarthy Hill.

He was raised and lived in Pimlico where he attended Saint Ambrose and later Calvert Hall High School and graduated from Loyola College in Baltimore. After studying to become a Christian brother, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was wounded in Germany after D-Day. He received a Purple Heart and numerous other awards for his service.

After the war, he married Elizabeth Mary Brooksband. He was employed by the Social Security Administration and after his retirement he and his wife moved to Fenwick Island, Del. and later Ocean City. There they lived a rich life.

He served as Eucharist Minister at St. Lukes and St. Andrews Church in Ocean City and John Neuman Catholic Church in Ocean Pines. He was an active member in the Ocean City AARP, the Ocean City MAC Senior Center and he was an active member of the Delmarva Irish American Club where he was president and also held director positions. He and Elizabeth were grand marshals in the 1993 St. Patricks Day Parade and most recently he was an honored guest in the 2008 parade in Ocean City.

Survivors include his children, Cecilia McCarthy of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.; two sons, Daniel McCarthy of Perry Hall, Md. and Michael McCarthy of Winthrop, Mass.; five grandchildren, Brian McCarthy of Los Angeles, Kelly McCarthy of Columbia, Md., Emily McCarthy of Perry Hall, Md. and Adam and Lauren Petkus of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.; and great granddaughter, Mia McCarthy of Los Angeles. He had numerous friends and relatives who supported him to the end, most importantly his nephew Hank Meyer and his wife KC Meyer.

Ida Ruby Balladarsch

BERLIN – Ida Ruby Balladarsch, 89, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008 at her home.

Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Albert Maykrantz and Ethel Eline Maykrantz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank O. Balladarsch in 1971.

She is survived by her daughter, Gaylee Mays of Berlin, and granddaughter Lisa Miller and her husband Michael of Westminster MD. Also surviving is a nephew, Russell S. Maykrantz, Sr., and his former wife Joyce Maykrantz and family of Ocean City, niece Patricia Maykrantz Long and her family.

Balladarsch had worked as a political button maker during the war and was employed for 17 years at the MacNabb Funeral Home in Catonsville.

A cremation followed her death. Interment will take place in Lakeview
Cemetery near Sykesville at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Childrens House by the Sea, PO Box 3627, Ocean City, Md. 21842. Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

John M. Paulshock

NOTTINGHAM, Md. — Suddenly on Dec. 26, 2008 John M. Paulshock, 58 of Nottingham, Md., died.

He was the loving husband of Barbara Francis Paulshock; beloved son of Genevieve and the late Thomas Paulshock of Perry Hall, Md.; devoted father of Tanya J Carmen and her husband Kevin of Nottingham and Maria McCready and her husband Rusty of Abington; dear step­father of Derik Hargest of Glen Arm and the late Donny Hargest; loved brother of Tom Paulshock of Perry Hall, Brenda Paulshock of Kingsville, Jackie Hacke of Perry Hall, Robert Paulshock of Hereford, Billy Paulshock of Kingsville, Diane Hinsche of Ellicott City; and cherished grandfather of Kyler Carmen of Nottingham. Also survived by many loving family and friends.

Janice Horm Williams

BERLIN – Janice Horm Williams, 62, of Berlin passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008. She was born Sept. 14, 1946, in Takoma Park, Md.

She was the loving mother of Chrystal Fritter Cottrill; a sister of David Horm; and grandmother of Matthew, Emily and Connor.

She was a graduate of the University of Maryland.

The family says their mother, sister, and grandmother leaves us way too soon and will be deeply missed.

Williams requested that there be no funeral service.

Arrangements are being handled Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.
