BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team made a strong showing at the Lackey Invitational high school wrestling tournament in southern Maryland last weekend, finishing second among the 19 of the top programs in that area of the state and collecting a handful of individual titles along the way.

Decatur finished second last week at the Lackey Invitational, collecting 259 total team points to finish just behind tournament champion La Plata, which finished with 274 team points. La Plata dominated the event, sending seven wrestlers to the finals in their respective weight classes and winning five individual titles. The Seahawks finished a close second, sending six wrestlers into the finals and collecting three championships including Devin Bataille, Corey Tobias and Naval Academy-bound Danny Miller.

In the 103-pound class, Decatur’s Nick McLoota reached the finals before falling to Dylan Dull of La Plata in the championship and earned a second-place finish. At 119, Bataille beat Daniel Bratton of La Plata to claim the individual championship in the weight class. In the 125-pound class, Decatur’s James McGarry finished fourth after falling to Centennial’s Jim Guzman in his last match.

Decatur’s Corey Tobias pinned his way through the 130-pound class to earn the title in his division. Tobias has been on a hot streak with a first-place finish at the Lackey tournament after a strong showing at Decatur’s own War on the Shore tournament two weeks ago.

In the 135-pound class, Decatur’s Johnny Soghomonian moved through the brackets before falling to Antonio Middleton of Lackey to earn a fourth-place finish. Seahawk Matt Doherty also earned a fourth-place finish for Decatur after falling to Chase Ursiti in his last match. Josh Bargar took third-place in the 152-pound class for the Seahawks after beating James Monda of Great Mills in his last match of the weekend.

Decatur’s Danny Kominos stayed on an early season roll, reaching the championship match in the 160-pound class before falling to Zach Lohr of Thomas Stone. At 171, Decatur’s Bryce Smith had a nice tournament, earning a fifth place finish. Mike Meekins continued to make great progress, finishing second to Andrew Lloyd in the 189-pound weight class.

At 215, Decatur’s Danny Miller beat Brock Morris of Chopticon to win the individual title and continue his assault on the Seahawks’ record book. Finally, Decatur’s Dylan Drew had a nice run in the 285-pound class, beating Great Mills’ Aaron Rondenizer finish fourth in his bracket.
