BERLIN- After taking incremental steps in the restoration of the once-proud Stephen Decatur boys’ varsity basketball team last year, Coach Travis Lloyd and his young team are hoping to keep moving in the right direction as they prepare for the 2008-2009 campaign.
After bottoming out with just one win two years ago, the Seahawks, under Lloyd made significant strides in improving the program last year, although it wasn’t always evident in the box scores or the final standings. Decatur won four games last year, which hardly counts as a complete turnaround, but the Seahawks showed marked improvement on both ends of the floor, and perhaps more importantly, their attitude and mental toughness.
With another season set to get underway on Monday with a home game against Washington, the Seahawks are hoping hard work and determination make up for an overall lack of experience on the team. Decatur clearly has some talented returning players and a bunch of young players ready to make their mark on the program.
The Seahawks will rely heavily on sophomore Tre Foreman, who emerged last year as a freshman, and Andrew Brickey, a football standout and overall athlete who will be counted on to put the ball in the net. Chase Furst will run the point for Decatur and distribute the ball. Decatur has suffered somewhat recently with a lack of size up front, but the Seahawks have a pair of big men in the paint this year in 6’8” Tom Lubeski and 6’5” James Merryman.
The Seahawks open at home on Monday against Washington before hitting the road against Mardela on Tuesday.
