James Joseph Clements

BERLIN – James Joseph Clements, 86, of Ocean City, formerly of Woodlawn, died Friday, Nov 1, 2008 in Berlin.

Son of James Edward Clements Jr. and May Ellen Orndorff, he was born on June 5, 1922 in Baltimore. He was a husband of 62 years to Kathleen Clements. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, sons and daughter-in-law, Garry and Dustie Clements, James Clements III; two grand children, Toni Murray and Chasen Clements; and two great grandchildren, Natalie and Gabriel Murray. He was brother to Joseph Noel (deceased), Jean Jester (deceased) and Margaret Deems of Ocala, Fla.

At the age of 17, he joined the Maryland Army National Guard before it was federalized into the Army 29th Infantry Division where he was assigned to 110 Field Artillery, A Battery, and on D-Day he landed on Omaha Beach. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After the war he returned to Baltimore where he met and married Kathleen Rohlfing of Govans on Feb 14, 1947. They resided in Woodlawn and he was employed at Hecht Co. as an appliance service technician. He founded J.J. Clements Appliance Repair in 1960. He retired in 1986 to Ocean City and passed the family business to his son Garry, who has continued the business of JJ Clements & Son Appliance Service.

He was an avid fisherman, gardener, traveler, and Orioles fan. He was also a devoted father, husband, brother, Pop Pop, and friend to many.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov 15, 2008 at St Peters Lutheran Church in Ocean City. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Lymphoma Research Foundation 115 Broadway, 13th Floor New York, N.Y. 10006. Arrangements by Hastings Funeral Home, Selbyville, Del.

Wayne Edward Marshall

ATLANTIC, Va. – Wayne Edward Marshall, age 59, died on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008 at his home in Atlantic, Va.

Born in Saxis, Va., he was the son of the late Preston and Delores Insley Marshall.

Marshall was a Vietnam Army veteran and a member of the Disabled Veterans Association. He had worked for many years as a waterman.

He is survived by three sons, Keith Marshall, Sr. and his wife Sonia of Stockton, Md., Wayne Marshall, Jr. and his wife Billie Joe of Stockton, and Shawn Marshall of Salisbury; two daughters, Joni Yoder of New Church, Va. and Katrina Jenkins and her husband Jock of Saluda, Va.; one brother, Bruce Marshall and his wife Heather of Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren; two nieces; one nephew; and beloved companion, Dorothy Robinson.

Steve Powanda

OCEAN CITY – Steve Powanda, 76, died Thursday Oct. 30, 2008 at his home in Ocean City.

Born in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Wyslan and Mary Powanda. Powanda was a Navy veteran, a member of the American Legion in Ocean City, VFW in Ocean View, the Polish American club and NARFE. He loved riding his bike.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret N. Powanda; two daughters, Deborah Robin and husband Jerry of Gaithersburg, Md, and Carolyn Powanda-Croft and husband Phil of Pepperell, Mass; one brother, Michael Powanda of Oceanside, Calif.; and one granddaughter, Danielle Sara Robin.

Ethel Louise Hammel

SALISBURY – Ethel Louise Hammel, 73, died on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008 at Lakeside Assisted Living in Salisbury.

Born in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Florence Plotts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Hammel.

Hammel had worked as a program analyst for the Department of the Navy.

She was a member of Buckingham Presbyterian Church and Buckingham Ordained Deacons. She enjoyed crafts and painting.

She is survived by two step-sons, John Hammel and his wife Lynn and Thomas Hammel and his wife Gloria; two step-daughters, Karen King and her husband Homer and Elizabeth Lee and her husband Mike; 10 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Nov. 7 at 11:30 a.m. at Buckingham Presbyterian Church in Berlin. Friends may call from 11-11:30 a.m. The Rev. Gary Baer will officiate. Interment will be in Buckingham Cemetery.

Helene Margaret Jacob

OCEAN CITY – Helene Margaret Jacob, age 93, died on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Peter Joseph and Henrietta O’Brocki Wlasic. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis B. Jacob.

Jacob is survived by her daughter, Dolores Ritter of New Market, Md.; two grandchildren, Timothy Ritter and his wife Susan of Stafford, Va. and Michele Menzi of Frederick, Md.; and three great grandchildren, Kyle Menzi, Vincent Menzi and Mercedes Ritter. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

A private family interment will be held at a later date at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Md. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 209C Milford St., Salisbury, Md. 21804.

George Barry Hallowell

Ocean Pines – George Barry Hallowell, age 73, died on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008 at the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late George Bonneville Hallowell and Katherine Crouse Hallowell. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Evelyn Louise Phoebus Hallowell.

Hallowell had attended the University of Baltimore and had been a Train Master with Western Maryland Railroad for many years. He was an Air Force Veteran and a member of the American Legion in Westminster, Md. He was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Ocean City and the Delmarva Condominium Management Association.

Along with his wife, he is survived by three sons, G. Scott Hallowell and his

wife Lorraine of Hanover, Pa., Daniel Patrick Hallowell of Stevensville, Md. and G. Bradley Hallowell and his wife Jennifer of Ocean Pines; five grandchildren; one great granddaughter; two nieces; and one nephew. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Stone.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Friends may call on Friday at the funeral home from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Baltimore.
