Decatur V-Ball Falls in States

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity volleyball team bowed out of the state playoffs this week, falling to Reservoir, 3-2, on Monday in the Class 3A-East quarterfinals.

The Seahawks, seeded third in the state Class 3A-East tournament swept visiting Northeast of Anne Arundel County last Friday in the opening round to advance in the playoffs. Decatur was relatively untested in the first round match with Northeast, sweeping three games by the scores of 25-2, 25-9 and 25-8. Holly Melson collected nine aces and two kills, while Kristen Lubeski had six kills and five aces and Janet Davidson had four aces in two assists.

The first-round win propelled the Seahawks into the second round against six-seed Reservoir, but it wasn’t meant to be for Decatur, which fell in five games, 3-2. The Seahawks won the first game, 25-21, but dropped the next one, 25-18. Decatur exacted some revenge in the third game, topping Reservoir by the same score, 25-18, but Reservoir tied it at 2-2 with a 25-19 win in the fourth game.

Reservoir than closed it out with a 15-13 win in the decisive final game to advance in the tournament. Lubeski came up big again in the match against Reservoir with 10 digs, eight kills, six blocks and five aces. Olivia Turner had 15 kills and four digs, while Sam Collins had 12 assists and three kills. Decatur finished the season with an impressive 13-4 mark.
