Decatur Playoff Hopes Improve

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team cruised past Wicomico, 28-6, last weekend to improve its post-season chances with two very important games remaining on the schedule.

Typically, the Wicomico game is one the Seahawks circle as one of its toughest of the season, but the Indians are in a down year and Decatur took care of business in workmanlike fashion last Friday to improve to 5-3 on the season. Two weeks ago, Decatur dropped a close one to Bennett, putting its playoff hopes in jeopardy, but the win over WiHi last week, coupled with a little help from teams on the western shore, solidified the Seahawks’ position somewhat.

Because Decatur is the only school on the Eastern Shore in the state’s Class 3A, its post-season fate is tied to results from games on the other side of the bridge. The top four teams, based on the state’s point system, will reach the playoffs in the Class 3A-East bracket, and with a win over Wicomico last Friday, the Seahawks currently sit in the fourth position.

The good news is, Decatur is only four points out of second place in the Class 3A-East point standings, but the bad news is, the Seahawks are only one point out ahead of the fifth-place team and two points ahead of the sixth place team. Decatur plays North Caroline on the road tonight before finishing with an always-tough game against county rival Snow Hill.
