BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s men’s varsity soccer team wrapped its regular season last week with a 1-0 win over Worcester County rival Pocomoke and will host a first-round state playoff game against Aberdeen tonight.

The Seahawks finished a topsy-turvy season on a high note last Friday, topping Pocomoke, 1-0, on a goal by Kyle Gebhart for the only tally of the contest. With the win over Pocomoke, Decatur finished with an impressive 7-3-2 mark to earn the four-seed in the Class 3A-East playoffs.

The win over Pocomoke last week continued a season-long pattern of ups and downs this season for the Seahawks, who hope the victory signals the start of another upward trend entering the playoffs. Decatur won its first two games of the season before going on a stretch that included a loss and two ties.

After that, the Seahawks peeled off three straight wins to improve to 5-1-2 around the midway mark in the season. They then alternated wins and losses down the stretch with a win coming against Pocomoke in the finale.

With the win over the Warriors, the Seahawks finished the final stretch of the season at 2-2 with each of the contests ending in a shutout one way or the other. Decatur lost to Bennett, 4-0, followed by a 12-0 win over Snow Hill. The Seahawks then fell to Parkside, 1-0, before beating Pocomoke, 1-0, last week.

When the dust settled, Decatur finished with a nice 7-3-2 record and earned a number-four seed in the state Class 3A-East playoffs, which get underway tonight. The Seahawks will face Aberdeen tonight at home at 7 p.m. If the Seahawks prevail, they will face the winner of the game between Reservoir and Northeast, with a possible date with top-seeded Annapolis lurking on the other side of the bracket.
