BERLIN- A resilient Stephen Decatur girls’ varsity soccer team rallied from the two-goal deficit late in Monday’s game against Queen Anne’s for a 3-2 win and is now preparing for a first-round state playoff game tonight at home.

The Seahawks found themselves in the rare position of trailing in a game late during their contest with Queen Anne’s on Monday. Trailing 2-0 with just over eight minutes remaining, Decatur scored the last three goals of the game to secure the 3-2 win in the regular season finale.

Julia Finecey scored Decatur’s first goal of the game with around eight minutes left to cut the Queen Anne’s lead to 2-1. Shortly thereafter, Taylor Blazer found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2 with plenty of time left. Finally, Bradley Janson scored the go-ahead goal with time running down in the second half to steal the 3-2 win for the Seahawks.

Decatur finished with an impressive 8-2-1 record and earned the three-seed in the state Class 3A-East playoffs. While the Seahawks had little trouble putting the ball in the goal this season, it was the stingy defense that carried them to the 8-2-1 record and a three-seed in the state playoffs. Six of Decatur’s eight wins were shutouts including a recent four-game stretch where they beat Snow Hill, 10-0; Mardela, 6-0; Bennett, 1-0; and Wicomico, 4-0, before Monday’s 3-2 win over Queen Anne’s.

The Decatur girls are hoping to go further this year in the regional than they did last year. In the 2007 campaign, the Seahawks entered the regionals as the four-seed in the Class 3A-East playoffs but fell to Atholton in the first round. The third-seeded Seahawks will face Centennial at home tonight in a first-round match-up in the Class 3A-East playoffs at 5 p.m. in the first part of a double-header which will feature the Decatur boys in the nightcap.
