New Show Eyes OC
OCEAN CITY — For the first time under one roof, anyone who covets the finer things in life can visit the Coastal Style Luxury Living Show at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City from Oct. 24-26.
More than 60 exclusive exhibitors ranging from I.G. Burton Mercedes-Benz/BMW, Shore Appliance Connection and Viking and OC Floor Gallery to Elegant Designs, il Collezione and Liljenquist & Beckstead will be on-hand to demonstrate what they do and how they do it for the thousands of residents and visitors expected to attend.
Among the highlights are the “Viking Chef Competition,” presented by Shore Appliance Connection, where the region’s top chefs will be competing for the “Coastal Style’s Best Chef Award.” Some of the contestants include Kevin Reading of Nage in Rehoboth Beach; Travis Wright of the Shark on the Harbor in West Ocean City; and Adam Sanders of Jules Restaurant in Ocean City, among many others. In addition, the demonstration kitchen of Paula Deen, the well-known chef, restaurateur, author and Emmy Award-winning television personality, will also be at the show, and will serve as the backdrop where regional chefs will share their best kept culinary secrets with the audience.
“We’re very excited to be bringing this one-of-a-kind event to Ocean City,” said Erin Westman, who along with her husband Jon are the founders and publishers of Coastal Style Magazine, which is the only periodical of its kind to showcase the finer things in life for readers in Maryland, Delaware, and parts of Virginia.
Other highlights of the show include a special “Antique Appraisal Area” where people can bring in their prized possessions for expert appraisal. The renowned team of Charlene Upham and Steven Blumenauer, partners of Charlene Upham Estate of Mardela Springs, will provide free, verbal appraisals. Upham recommends people bring items such as sterling silver, oriental rugs, antique jewelry, oil paintings, rare coins, photographs and family heirlooms, among other valuables. They will also help determine if the piece is insured properly as well as any other questions attendees may have.
Another incentive for the public to attend the show is the collection of luxurious prizes that will be given away during the event, including a $5,000 shopping spree at Kendall Home Furnishings, original works from renowned artists such as Patrick Henry, Ellen Rice, Liz Lind and Stephen Cherry, sports memorabilia from the Philadelphia Eagles, among others, and more.
“We think this will be a very exciting event, and will give visitors the chance to really get to know many of our region’s most upscale and creative businesses,” Jon Westman said. “And, the cost of admission is just $10, so it will be a great, inexpensive way for families to spend a weekend at the beach, and get to see so many wonderful exhibitors.”
Show tickets are available at Kendall Home Furnishings in West Ocean City and at Rooster’s Nest in Fenwick Island as well as at the convention center during the event.
New Coordinator Named
BERLIN – The Maryland Coastal Bays Program announced last week that former local journalist Anita Ferguson will take over as public outreach coordinator.
“We are excited to have Anita join our team,” said Director Dave Wilson. “She brings with her a wealth of knowledge about issues concerning the watershed and a strong background in journalism and public relations that will be a great asset to the Coastal Bays Program.”
Ferguson will be responsible for keeping residents, visitors and elected officials informed and educated on watershed-related issues.
Ferguson replaces Wilson who was named director in April. A former local print journalist, she covered a variety of topics including bay-related issues, business and political matters. Known for her accuracy and fairness as a reporter, she won several regional awards for Excellence in Journalism from the Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association.
She has more than 15 years experience in broadcasting, journalism, public information and marketing and is looking forward to putting her skills to work at the MCBP. She comes to the Coastal Bays Program from the Patrick L. Henry Fine Art Gallery where she worked as the marketing director.
A 10-year resident of Worcester County, Ferguson is active in the community as a volunteer event coordinator and fundraiser and is founder of the Parkinson’s Alliance of the Lower Shore. She is a graduate of San Francisco State University where she earned a degree in speech.
Examination Passed
OCEAN CITY – Christine Selzer, Manager of the Ocean City office of Merrill Lynch formally announced that James R. Giles and Kevin J. Crooks of Ocean City office have passed the Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards Examination.
On Oct. 2, the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. announced that 54 percent of the 2,249 individuals who sat for the July CFP® Certification Examination passed. The CFP Board-administered, 10-hour, two-day exam was conducted at 50 sites nationwide.
According to the Certified Financial Planning Board of Standards, Inc. “The exam covers nearly 100 topics based on periodic studies of the job knowledge necessary to practice financial planning. CFP Board’s CFP® Certification Examination requires full integration of knowledge covered in CFP Board’s financial planning topic list, similar in concept to the bar examination for licensed attorneys and the exam for licensed CPAs.”
The mission of Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. is to benefit the public by granting the CFP® certification and upholding it as the recognized standard of excellence for personal financial planning.
Re/Max Names New Leader
OCEAN CITY – Re/Max Premier Properties has announced that Doug Galloway is the new vice president and general sales manager of Re/Max Premier Properties with responsibility for the 62nd Street office in Ocean City and the Ocean Pines and West Ocean City offices.
Through September year to date, Re/Max has been the top real estate company in the area with the greatest combined total sales volume. This success is due to the hard work of the 74 professional agents working at Re/Max.
“I will focus on keeping Re/Max as the top local company and am looking forward to working with the best agents in town,” Galloway said.
Galloway has been a full-time successful real estate agent in Ocean City since 1989. He was a volunteer and is a life member of the Ocean Pines Fire Department and is a distinguished Army veteran. He is a graduate of Salisbury University. He is married and living in Ocean Pines with this wife, Sandy Galloway who is also a Realtor.
