M. Gennette Butler McCabe

BERLIN – M. Gennette Butler McCabe, age 81, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Ocean City, she was the daughter of the late Elton T. and Ella K. Butler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irving McCabe, in 2005.

McCabe was a charter member of the Ocean City Lioness Club, past Worthy Matron of Holly Chapter #45 Order of Eastern Star, life member of the Ocean City Sinepuxent American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and past President of the Ocean City-Berlin Soroptomist Club.

She is survived by her son, Tom McCabe of Frederick; three grandchildren, Jennifer Stillwell and her husband Danny, Jessica McCabe, and John T. McCabe; two great grandchildren, Ethan and Brian Stillwell; a sister, Rowena B. Taylor of Fruitland; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Francis B. Mudrak.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. The Rev. George Godfrey officiated. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery.

John Robert Short

BERLIN – John Robert Short, age 57, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008.

Born in Virginia, he was the son of Lloyd R. Short and the late Beula E. Musser.

Short was a Navy veteran. He was employed by Mountaire as a truck driver.

Along with his father, he is survived by his wife, Connie M. Short; a son, John R. Short, Jr. and his wife Stephanie; a daughter, Renee Lynn Salgado; two brothers, Lloyd R. Short "Babe" and Barry Short; two sisters, Pam Tweed and Bobbie Short; two grandchildren, Joshua D. Short and Chloe R. Short; his mother-in-law, Nancy I Farmer; Colleen Lutz, sister-in-law and personal family friend; and his two Jack Russell dogs, Russell and Ginger. He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris "Jackie" Short.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008 at 1:00 pm at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant Rd., Willards, Md. Pastor David Herr and Pastor Kenneth J. Eller will officiate.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Worcester County Humane Society, PO Box 48, Berlin, Md. 21811 or to National Breast Cancer Foundation, 2600 Network Blvd, Suite 3000, Frisco, Texas 75034.

Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Brenda Marie Hall

BERLIN – Brenda Marie Hall, age 55, passed at home on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008 after a long and fierce battle with metastatic breast cancer.

She is survived by her husband, Ray, her mother, Louise Tilch and brother Don Tilch both of Silesia, Md., numerous cousins, in-laws and friends around the world.

Hall was born in Fort Washington, Md. She was a federal employee, retired in 2003 and moved to Ocean City in 2004 where she and her husband made their home.

She was athletic, outgoing, enjoyed running, travel, decorating, antiques and flea markets. Her love for the sea and all things associated is evident in the decor of their Ocean City home.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 2600 Network Blvd., Suite 3000, Frisco, Texas 75034.

Kevin L. Hitchens

BERLIN – Kevin L. Hitchens 45, of Gumboro, Del., passed away on Aug. 12, 2008.

He enjoyed gardening and landscaping especially working with flowers. He was also known for his drawings, and was a great lover of animals. He was preceded in death by his father, James D. Hitchens Sr., in 2000, and his brother, Bryan Hitchens, in 2005. He will be sadly missed by his mother, Glenda J. Hitchens of Gumboro, Del., and his brothers, Barry Hitchens and wife Diane of Gumboro, Del., James D. Hitchens Jr. and wife Tammy of Gumboro, Delaware. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Mera, Chelsea, Trent, Keith and Kirt.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. at Watson Funeral Home 211 Washington St. Millsboro, Del. where friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be in West Woods Cemetery, Gumboro, Del.
