Biker Recovering From Crash Through Vehicle’s Back Window

OCEAN CITY – A New Jersey biker is in stable condition this week after a bizarre multi-vehicle accident on Wednesday morning on Coastal Highway that sent him flying through the back window of a vehicle in front of him.

Shortly before noon on Wednesday, Ocean City police responded to a four-vehicle collision on Coastal Highway at 67th Street. The investigation revealed traffic was stopped and waiting for the light to change in the southbound lanes of Coastal Highway. Liam Canavan, 29, of Blackwood, N.J., was sitting still on his motorcycle in stationery traffic waiting for the light to change when he was struck from behind by a Dodge Durango driven by Christopher Rihn, 36, of Lititz, Pa.

According to police reports, Rihn was apparently not paying attention to the traffic stopped in front of him when he collided with Canavan on his motorcycle. The impact of the collision ejected Canavan from his motorcycle and threw him through the back rear window of the vehicle in front of him, a Chevrolet Cobalt.

The impact of that collision drove the Chevy Cobalt into the vehicle stopped in front of it. Canavan was extracted from the vehicle and transported by Ocean City EMS to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury where he was listed in stable condition as of late Wednesday. Rihn was charged with failing to control speed to avoid a collision.
