Charles L. "Roy" Trageser

BERLIN – Charles L. "Roy" Trageser, 79, of Berlin, and formerly of Baltimore died at his home on June 15, 2008 after a short battle with cancer.

Trageser is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patricia L. Trageser (Murray). In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Roy Trageser, Jr. and his wife Yvonne and their sons David and Michael Gates, and a daughter, Kathy Melvin and her children, Poppy’s "Little Man" and "Little Miss Prissy", Tyler and Amanda. He is also survived by a loving and caring family, Harriet Schneider, Andrew, Jr. "Bud" and Billie Trageser, Mary and Jack Armstrong, James and Elizabeth Trageser, Mary Alice Madairy, William and Carol Murray; many nieces and nephews who loved him and looked up to him; many, many friends including his lifelong friend Herman Lenzenweger, a special buddy Ray Maule; and the entire Lankford family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew, Sr. and Louise Trageser (Brust) and a brother Edmund Trageser.

A memorial Mass will be held in his honor on Friday at 11 a.m. at Holy Savior Catholic Church in Ocean City. Rev. John P. Klevence will officiate.

The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802 or St. Mary Star of the Sea – Vision, 1705 Philadelphia Av., Ocean City, Md. 21842.

Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Evelyn Theresa Hayden Rankin

BERLIN – On Thursday, June 12, 2008, Evelyn Theresa Hayden Rankin passed away  peacefully at the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center having been surrounded by her loving family.

Born Dec. 31, 1923 in Baltimore to the late Gerda Boe Hayden and Bernard James Hayden, she grew up in Howard County where she graduated from Clarksville High School.

After graduation, she went to work in Baltimore City, under the guidance of her grandparents Amalia and Gerhard Boe. While attending night school to gain secretarial skills for better job opportunities, she met George Thomas Rankin, who was her typing teacher. A romance ensued and the following year they were married on Sept. 5, 1942. During World War II, they lived at Bainbridge Naval Station then briefly lived in Baltimore City before moving to Glen Burnie where they raised their family.

In the 1955, Evelyn and George built the Emerald Isle Apartments on 43rd Street in Ocean City. In the 1960s, they purchased the building next door and named it the Shannon Mist. From 1957, the family spent every summer in Ocean City until 1977. Evelyn was literally the daily manager and jack-of-all-trades for the 13 apartments for all of those years while her husband worked in the city. She did all of that in addition to watching over her four children who were enjoying the ocean and beach.

In 1979, they purchased a home in Ocean Pines where Evelyn lived until

entering the Berlin Nursing Home. She joined her two daughters as a member of the Ocean City Lioness Club.

She was the loving and devoted mother of Donna and her husband William Greenwood of Ocean City, Bonnie and her husband Kendrick Robertson of Ocean Pines, Michael Rankin of Phoenix, Ariz. and Michele Magnone of Snow Hill.

The greatest joys and delights of her life were her nine grandchildren. They are Christopher and James Greenwood, Brian and Daniel Firth, Tanya and Danielle Rankin, Steven Rankin, Kaitlyn Vaughn, Niko Magnone and three great grandchildren.

She is, also, survived by her sister Lillian Bernadette Williamson of Annapolis, and numerous nieces and nephews whom she treated to many good times during Ocean City vacations.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Rankin, and her brother, James Bernard Hayden of Toledo, Ohio.

A Memorial Mass was held at Holy Savior Catholic Church on Tuesday. Donations may be made to St. Mary Star of the Sea/Holy Savior Cathollic Church, 1705 Philadelphia Ave., Ocean City, Md. 21842 or Ocean City Lioness Club, P.O. Box 6, Ocean City, Md 21843.

Mary Ellen White

SALISBURY – Mary Ellen White, age 61,died Monday, June 16, 2008 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born in Washington D.C. she was the daughter of the late Kenneth Paul Hinkle and Ellen Davis Hinkle. She was preceded in death by her husband, William White.

She was associated with the Lighthouse Church of God in Berlin. She had many friends, loved the beach and played bridge with a bridge club.

She is survived by a son, Kenneth Scott Treese and his wife Laura; a daughter, Deborah Treese Sewell and her husband William; a sister, Lorraine Woods and her husband Charles; three step-sisters, Donna Gentile and her husband Bruce, Jina Hull and her husband Robert, and Debra Willie; three grandchildren, Paige, Peyton and William; many nieces and nephews; one great nieces; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by a step-sister, Joanne Barrett.

A memorial service will be held on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin where friends may call from 3-5 p.m. Interment will be held at a later date at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton, Md.. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 111 S Independence Mall E Ste 411, The Philadelphia Bourse Bld, Philadelphia, Pa. 19106-2521.

Peggy R. Scherer

OCEAN CITY – Peggy R. Scherer, age 86, died Sunday June 15, 2008 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in the Dominican Republic, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. Rupkey and Olive Pearl Rupkey.

Scherer loved arts and crafts and flowers and had a special love for animals.

Scherer is survived by her husband, Frank Scherer Sr; one son, Frank Scherer Jr; and wife Janet of Ocean City, one daughter, Patricia Groth and husband James of Orange, Va; two grandsons, Robert Groth and wife Tammy and James Groth; three great grandchildren, Cori Wolf, Dustin and Devyn Groth; and one great great grandchild, Parker Wolf. She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

A service was held this week at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Park.

Betty Lou Lewis

SALISBURY – Betty Lou Lewis, age 69, died Saturday, June 4, 2008 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.

Born in Berlin, she was the daughter of the late Paul Alfred Stephenson. She is survived by her mother, Marcinia Downing Stephenson of Hebron, and by her son, Steven "Peanut" Lewis of Delmar, Md. Also surviving is a brother, William Edward Stephenson of Sharptown; two sisters, Bobbi Ellis of Ocala, Fla. and Patti Alford of Belleview, Fla.; and several nieces and  nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Henry Stephenson.

Lewis was a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School and a member of St. Martins United Methodist Church near Berlin. She was employed with Food Lion in Selbyville for many years.

A funeral service was held yesterday at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Interment was held in Evergreen Cemetery in Berlin.

Francis Spine

WEST OCEAN CITY – A memorial service is being held for Francis Spine on June 23 at 4 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church on Riyte 611.

Spine, 73, died on June 5, 2008 at Berlin Nursing Home. He is survived by his wife, Joan Spine.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Diabetes Association.

Hilda L. Widgeon

BERLIN – Hilda L. Widgeon, 88, died Thursday, June 12, 2008 at her home. 

She was the daughter of the late Oscar and Ray Quillen Pusey.

She is survived by her sons, Larry V. Widgeon and his wife, Judy of Berlin, David P. Widgeon and his wife Faye of Salisbury, Robert E. Widgeon and his wife Taffy of Spokane, Wa. and John G. Widgeon and his wife Linda of Bishopville. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, John V. Widgeon, in 1992, and two daughters, Joyce M. Widgeon in 1940 and Anita K. Dennis in 1996.

Widgeon was a homemaker and loved bingo and visits to Atlantic City, Dover and Harrington.
