Local Students Announcements

BERLIN – The following is a compilation of announcements regarding scholastic and college students sent into this paper over the last month from points near and far.

Katelyn Clark of Berlin made the Dean’s List for the spring 2008 semester at High Point University, where she is a sophomore majoring in psychology. She is also an ambassador at the university.

To be named to the Dean’s List, students are those who have attained a 3.8 GPA for the previous semester based on a 4.0 scale.

Clark is the daughter of Dane and Barbara Clark and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Murray of Berlin.

Jessica Hannah Queen Howard recently earned a degree from Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C. She graduated as a member of the Beta Kappa Chi and reigns as the 2008 Miss Black-n-Gold.

Howard, the daughter of Cynthia Briddell-Howard of Berlin and James Howard Jr. of Portsmouth, Va., will continue her graduate studies at Sherman College in Spaiturbury, S.C.

Michelle Wangel, a freshman at Worcester Prep, was honored for her excellent writing by the Optimists Clubs of Maryland. Her essay, which won the Worcester County competition, placed third at the State of Maryland level. She was also the national first place winner for Grade 9 stories in the DAR Junior American Citizens competition.

The Awards and Recognition Subcommittee of the American Cancer Society for Delaware, Delmarva, National Capital and Northern Virginia has announced that Katie Marshall, a sophomore at Worcester Prep, is the 2008 recipient of the Award of Excellence for Youth for the American Cancer Society. The award is presented to a volunteer in recognition of his or her outstanding achievements in one or more of the strategic areas of the society. Marshall is the daughter of Mike and Kathy Marshall of Salisbury.

Dominique Kunciw, a junior at Worcester Prep, was the second place winner in the Letters About Literature State of Maryland competition, a national reading and writing program that encourages young people, grades 4-12 to read books and be inspired by an author. Over 1,000 Maryland students participated in the competition.

Six talented local students have been awarded a scholarship from the Worcester County Arts Council in support of their educational and artistic goals. The artists were selected by the Arts Council Scholarship Committee for their artistic talent and community contribution.

Katherine Rosinski, a graduate from Stephen Decatur High School, was awarded an art scholarship in the category of Visual Arts/Art Therapy.

From Snow Hill High School, Diana Harmon and Sam Brittingham received awards in Visual Arts category.

Caitlin Whalan and William Harrington, seniors from Worcester Preparatory School, were awarded scholarships for their talent in music and graphic design.

The following students were recognized by Salisbury University’s 82nd Annual Spring Honors Convocation.

Ashley Biscoe, daughter of Lisa Harrison of Snow Hill and W.T. and Laura Biscoe of Hebron, was the recipient of the Worcester County Teachers Association Scholarship. Biscoe is a senior majoring in elementary education. She is a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the national education honor society, and Alpha Psi Omega, the national theatre honor society. Biscoe is a 2003 graduate of Snow Hill High School.

Brent Alogna, son of Ignazio and Denise Alogna of Pocomoke City, was the recipient of the James F. Glenn Memorial Award in Chemistry. Alogna is a senior majoring in biochemistry. He is a 2003 graduate of Pocomoke High School.

Jennifer LaMade, wife of Eric LaMade of Berlin, was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. LaMade is a graduate student studying social work.

Andreea Vlaicu of Ocean City was the recipient of the Wilma Jarman Yeatman Ancient History Award. She is a senior majoring in history.

Zachary Caceres of Ocean Pines was the recipient of the Whall Honors Award for Writing Excellence. Caceres is a freshman majoring in music.

Patrick Sean O’Brien, son of Edmond and Mary O’Brien of Berlin and a 2004 graduate of Stephen Decatur High School, has graduated cum laude from Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va. with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work. He has accepted a position as a Mental Health Technician with an Ohio firm.

Kara Cruice of Berlin was among the students who qualified for the spring Dean’s List at Hood College. Students must have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average in at least 12 credit hours to be eligible.

Michelle West of Berlin recently earned President’s and Dean’s List honors for the spring 2008 semester at Coastal Carolina University. To qualify for the President’s List, students must earn a 4.0 grade point average.

Benjamin O. Berry of Ocean City was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army during an ROTC Commissioning Ceremony at Canisius College last month. He graduated from Canisius College on May 17 with a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He is assigned to the Military Police and will report to the Buffalo barracks for his first duty station.
