Dyer Shines in Loss to Salisbury

BERLIN- A familiar face and number on the lacrosse field returned to the local area last weekend when former Worcester Prep standout Trip Dyer helped Gettysburg College nearly pull off an upset of Salisbury University in the NCAA Division III national semifinals.

Dyer, a senior at Gettysburg, scored a team-high three goals against Salisbury last Sunday, all of which came in the first half, to lead the Bullets to an early lead. Salisbury eventually pulled it out, 11-10, in double-overtime to advance to the national championship game again, but for one afternoon, it was a bit of a homecoming for Dyer, who graduated from Worcester Prep in 2005.

Dyer was an All-American and co-captain of the Mallards’ team in 2003 that went a perfect 14-0 on the season and won a conference championship. He was a finalist in 2003 for the Kelly Award given to the top high school player in Maryland. After a solid freshman season at Gettysburg, Dyer missed all of 2005 with a knee injury.

He returned with a good season in 2006 and last year was an All-America Honorable Mention and was a first-team All Centennial Conference member. This year, he started all 20 games at attack for Gettysburg and scored 32 goals and dished out 11 assists. Just this week, Dyer was one of 10 student-athletes from Gettysburg named to the Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team and was also named to the 2008 North-South All-Star team.
