Decatur Nine Ousted from States

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity baseball team’s trek toward a possible state championship hit a roadblock last weekend when the Seahawks fell to host Centennial, 9-0, on the road last Saturday.

The Seahawks had won playoff games on back to back days at home last week to Class 3A-East Region semifinals against top-seeded Centennial. Decatur beat Howard, 7-4, at home on Tuesday and came back the next day to beat Reservoir, 9-7, at home to earn a shot against Centennial.

However, the Seahawks ran into a tough pitcher last Saturday against Centennial’s Ben Winter, who allowed just one hit in six innings of work. Unable to get anything going on offense, the Seahawks fell to the Eagles, 9-0, to put an end to what was otherwise a great season on the Berlin campus.

Decatur finished the regular season with a 13-5 record and had won five in a row and seven out of nine going into the state playoffs to earn a four-seed going into the tournament. With wins over Howard and Reservoir at home, it appeared the Seahawks had momentum on their side as they prepared for Centennial, but it wasn’t meant to be as the Eagles rolled on their way to the east region title.

The Seahawks finished the season with an impressive 15-6 overall record and with several key players returning next year, the future looks bright for the Decatur baseball program.
