Mildred Sturgis Parsons Marfing

SNOW HILL – Mildred Sturgis Parsons Marfing of Mount Vernon, Va., died on Jan. 11, 2008 after battling pancreatic cancer and a stroke.

She was born in Snow Hill as Mildred Sturgis Parsons to the late William Herman Parsons and Mildred Louise Sturgis on July 27, 1921.

Throughout her distinguished and successful life, she was well known for her many talents and abilities, and for her tenacity — there was nothing she could not do.

She loved the Eastern Shore and the time she was able to spend at her ocean front condominium in Ocean City. She delighted in calling friends and family to tell them what time the sun “rose out of the Atlantic” that morning. She also treasured her visits there because they allowed her to spend time with her extended family, which was very important to her. She shared her research on local history and family photographs with all, determined that family history would live on.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Colonel Thomas E. Marfing, U.S. Army, Retired; daughter, Lt Col Sally S. Marfing, U.S. Air Force, Retired, and her husband, Lt Col John Pellett, U.S. Air Force, Retired, of Mount Vernon, Va.; and son, Dr. Thomas E. Marfing, Jr., a surgeon, and his wife, Marie DiLorenzo; and three beloved grandchildren Nicholas, Spencer, and Dallas of Winchester, Va.

In addition to her immediate family, she is survived by three sisters, Maxine Patterson of Havre de Grace; Stella Griffith and her husband Arland of Seaford, Del.; and Gayle Gillespie and her husband Lloyd of Snow Hill; a brother-in-law, Maurice Long of Pocomoke City; and two sisters-in-law, Joyce Parsons Lowe of Salisbury, and Emily Stark of Snow Hill. She was predeceased by her mother, father and stepmother Fannye Perdue Parsons, her sister Virginia Long, and two brothers, Wilbur Parsons and William Stark. She also has many nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved her dearly.

Due to the large number of family and friends she has on the Eastern Shore, there will be a memorial service at Bates United Methodist Church in Snow Hill on Feb. 23, 2008, at 11 a.m.

Funeral services will be held at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel on Tuesday, April 8 at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Arlington National Cemetery, with a reception at the Fort Myer Officers Club.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to Salisbury University Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 2655, Salisbury, Md. 21802, earmarked for the Department of Nursing, or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Inc. (PanCAN), 2141 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 7000, El Segundo, Calif. 90245.
