Doreathea E. "Toots" Coffey

BERLIN – Doreathea E. "Toots" Coffey, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, at the age of 104.

Born on April 17, 1903 in Summit, N.J., she was the middle child in a family of nine of the late Paul W. and Mary Parkin. She was preceded in death by her eight brothers and sisters, Charlotte, Loretta, Helen, Martha, Bill, Frank, Leonard and Jack.

She spent her formative years in Summit and the local school system. At the age of 16, she began employment with New Jersey Bell and continued in various operator positions until the age of 65. Upon retirement, she moved to Leisure Village in Lakewood, N.J. and in 2003 to Ocean Pines with Lily and Ward Parkin. In 2005, Toots moved to the Gull Creek Retirement Community in Berlin.

Services were held. Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Nancy S. Young

SNOW HILL – Nancy S. Young, age 52, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007 at her home in Snow Hill.

Born in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Anton and Anna Holoko Schumeyko. She is survived by her beloved husband, Bruce; loving brother, Tony Schumeyko and his wife Karen; an aunt, Katherine Kulyk; a special friend, Betty Tilghman; and many cousins and friends. She is also survived by her best friend and loyal companion, loving pet "Rodney".

Nancy was the owner of B&N Sales in Snow Hill, she loved flowers and enjoyed yard work. She loved spending time with her 3 ½ year old Rottweiler "Rodney".

Services were held. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Coastal Hospice, 2604 Old Ocean City Rd., PO Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802, Snow Hill Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 83, Snow Hill, Md. 21863, or Wicomico County Humane Society, 5309 Citation Dr., Salisbury, Md. 21804. Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

John David Barrett

BERLIN – John David Barrett, age 68, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Maryland he was the son of the late Dawson Horine and Betty J. Engle Horine. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda A. Barrett; a son, Ronald Joseph Barrett and his wife Hagit; two daughters, Andrea Robbins and her husband Daniel and Tara Barrett; a brother, Jesse Miles; sisters, Barbara Trella and her husband Angelo, Elizabeth Ann Meredith and her husband Sam, and Sarah Miles; grandchildren, Maia, Karin, Jonathan Barrett, Michael Cooper, Ashley Lewis, Holland Lewis, Jr., Shawn Lewis, Daniel Robbins, Brianna and Kallie Gravenor; and one great-grandson, John David Cooper.

Barrett enjoyed spending his time doing genealogy research.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin where friends may call from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Chaplain Gail Mansell will officiate. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Tammi Cooper

DOVER, Del. – Tammi Cooper, age 45, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007 at Kent General Hospital in Dover, Del.

Born in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Frank Cooper and Dolly Webb Cooper. She is survived by her step mother, Janet Truitt and her husband Lawrence of Smyrna, Del., and her children, Richard Wayne Cooper, Michael Adylotte, Dolly Marie Cooper, David Cooper, Robert Adylotte, Laura Kenney, Melissa Adylotte, Tiffany Bandiare, Cheyanne Elliott and Kimberly Cooper. She was predeceased by a daughter, Jill Adylotte. Also surviving is a brother, Jeffrey Truitt and his wife Patsy, and a sister, Marie Mitchell and her husband Wilbert. There are numerous grandchildren.

She enjoyed bowling and crocheting and liked to watch wrestling and football.

A graveside service was held on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007 at Riverside Cemetery in Berlin. Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Nellie Malinda Bird

BERLIN – Nellie Malinda Bird, age 91, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007 at her home in Berlin.

Born in New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Falkinburg and Nellie Andrews Falkinburg. She is survived by a daughter, Nellie Gowar and her husband Robert of Berlin; two grandchildren, Diane Love and Anita Couillard; five great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren and one great great great grandchild.

Cremation followed her death. Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

James S. “Tooie” Nixon

SELBYVILLE – James S. “Tooie” Nixon, 77, formerly of Lanham, Md., died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007 at home.

Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Robert J. and Lillie Oliveri Nixon. He is survived by his wife, Ramona M. Nixon; three sons, Jim and his wife Darlene of Crownsville, Md., Paul of Fredricksburg, Va. and Phillip and his wife Andrea of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Terry and her husband Roger of Crownsville, Md.; a brother, Charles Nixon of Bowie, Md.; two sisters, Mary Nixon of Crownsville and Elizabeth Parness of Rose Haven, Md.; seven grandchildren, Michelle, Danielle, Brandon, Melissa, Nicole, Josh and Tiffany; and two great-grandchildren, Ashlan and Tessa.

Nixon had been a banker for many years, was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Ocean City and was a also a member of The Knights of Columbus and served as Treasurer.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Jan. 2, 2008.

Stanley M. Karwacki

BERLIN – Stanley M. Karwacki, 59, died suddenly on Dec. 14, 2007.

He was the beloved son of Lovell M. Karwacki and the late Stanley L. Karwacki; dear brother of Rodger Karwacki and his wife Karen; and loving uncle of Corey, Jessica, Ryan and Rachel Karwacki.

Karwacki was retired from the Small Business Administration, Federal Government after 30 years of service to reside in Ocean City.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 21, 2007.

Francis Florentino

OCEAN CITY – Frank Florentino, 83, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007 at the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Floral Park, N.Y., he was the son of Frank and Regina Quinn Florentino. He is survived by his loving wife, Jane; daughters, Paula Florentino and Peggy Dawson; sons, Frank and his wife Kim, Thomas and his wife Peggy Moran and Andrew and his wife Tammy; brothers, Gregory Florentino of Brentwood, N.Y. and Robert Florentino of Jamestown, R.I.; five grandchildren, Cassandre Hayes (Troy), Timothy Florentino (Kelly), Laura Hall, Gregory and Rachel Florentino; and three great-grandchildren; Caleb, Conor and Hunter Florentino. In addition, he had three step-children, Michael Omlor (Marian), Theresa Pickell (Ken) and Christopher Omlor (Nicole), and three step-grandchildren, Timothy, Meredith and Sarah Omlor.

In 1942, Florentino enlisted in the Army Coast Artillery at age 18 and served his country during WWII in the Pacific theater. After a career as an air conditioning engineer, he spent his retirement enjoying his many hobbies including choral and barbershop singing, painting and gardening. Over the years, he directed a number of choruses and with his wife Jane, sang with the Worcester Chorale, Pinetones Chorus, Holy Savior Choir and Echoes. In 1988, he journeyed to Rome with the Diocesan Choir to perform at the Vatican and then to Austria at the Salzburg Festival.

As he wished, his body was donated to the Board of Anatomy at the University of Medical School.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Coastal Hospice or Echoes (Ecumenical Choir of the Eastern Shore).
