Decatur Sweeps And Improves To 7-3

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s men’s varsity soccer team scored a couple of big wins at home this week, beating Kent County, 7-3, on Monday and following that victory with a 6-0 shutout over county rival Snow Hill on Tuesday.

The Seahawks’ record now stands at 7-3 on the season including a 4-2 mark in the Bayside Conference. Decatur got the big week started with a 7-3 win over Kent County on Monday, but for a long time, it appeared the outcome might go the other way.

Kent County applied constant pressure on the Decatur defense and goalie Nick Hogan throughout the first half on Monday. At the 25:00 mark, Kent scored what appeared to be the game’s first goal on a hard shot past the diving Hogan, but the goal was waved off because of an offside penalty. A little over four minutes later, Kent County did score a legitimate goal to take a 1-0 lead at 20:41.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Decatur got its offense cranked up a short time later. On a free kick from midfield, Seahawk Jim Walls lofted the ball behind the Kent defense and a streaking Bruce Howe fired a shot in the corner to tie the score at 1-1 with 16:30 remaining in the first half. Less than a minute later, Howe scored again to put the Seahawks ahead, 2-1, a lead they would not relinquish.

Almost everybody got in the scoring act for the Seahawks in the second half as Decatur applied constant pressure on the Kent net. Howe, Kosi Aroh and Logan West each scored two goals for Decatur in the 7-3 win. Hogan had eight saves.

The Seahawks picked up where they left off the next day with a 6-0 win over visiting Snow Hill. This time, it was Evan Tomasello leading the way with two goals, while Howe, Andrew Wagner and Jim Simons each scored one apiece. Hogan was solid again in goal, recording seven saves.

The Seahawks now sit comfortably in third place in the Bayside Conference behind Bennett and Pocomoke. Decatur will face Pocomoke at home next Thursday in the regular season finale.
