Four Teams Share Early Lead in Flag Football League

OCEAN CITY- The Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department’s Fall Flag Football League got off to a fast start this week with four great games. The following is a quick look at some of the action:

– Tequila Duffybird 19- Blue Ox 12: In a see-saw contest, Tequila Duffybird scored last and came away with the seven point win. Blue Ox got on the board first with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Jamie Lewis to Todd Barshinger for a quick 6-0 lead. Tequila responded with a one-yard TD run by Chase George to tie the game at 6-6. For Blue Ox, Lewis connected again with Barshinger, this time on a 12-yard touchdown pass, to take back the lead at 12-6.

After an interception by Kevin Davis, George scored again for Tequila Dbird on a seven-yard touchdown run and the extra point was good, putting Tequila Dbird up 13-12. Tequila’s J.R. Emmanuel settled the score once and for all with a 27-yard touchdown run to complete the 19-12 victory. Dennis Eade had an interception for Tequila Dbird, while Barshinger had a pick for Blue Ox.

– Crab Cake Factory 24- Three Brothers Pizza 21: In another back-and-forth contest, the Crab Cake Factory got the ball last and came away with the three-point victory. Crab Cake Factory scored first on a four-yard TD pass from Steve Fawler to Dustin Stokes for a 6-0 lead. Three Brother’s Chip Purnell then went on a 43-yard touchdown run and the extra point was good, putting Three Brothers up 7-6.

Crab Cake Factory retook the lead, 12-7, on a two-yard TD pass from Fawler to Blair Gallion. Three Brother’s Antoine Purnell then threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Chip Purnell to take the lead at 13-12. Fawler answered again, this time on a two-yard TD pass to Chris Rumfelt to go back ahead 18-13, but Three Brother’s Bernie Fisher picked off the conversion and returned it to the end zone to cut the lead to 18-15.

Three Brothers scored again on a 13-yard TD pass from Antoine Purnell to Todd Lasher to take the lead 21-18. However, Fawler threw one more TD pass to Gallion and the Crab Cake Factory escaped with the 24-21 win. Brandon Bailey had a pick for Three Brothers.

– Gemcraft Homes 20- Buxy’s Salty Dog 19: Defending champs Buxy’s Salty Dog fell in the season opener to Gemcraft Homes in a nail-biter, 20-19. Gemcraft scored first on a two-yard TD run by Ray Taranto for a quick 6-0 lead. Buxy’s answered with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Kurt Purnell to Evan Dittler and the extra point was good, putting the Dog up 7-6 early in the contest.

Taranto then threw a 12-yard TD pass to Eric Givens and a two-point conversion by Ron Stricklet put Gemcraft back on top, 14-7. Buxy’s scored on a five-yard TD pass from Nick Jones to Frank Rimmil, but the extra point failed and Gemcraft hung on to the 14-13 lead. Jones put Buxy’s on top, 19-14, with a three-yard run. After an interception by Adam Rones, Gemcraft scored the final TD of the game on a 10-yard pass from Taranto to Stricker and got away with the one-point win, 20-19.

– Kirby’s Pub 21- Greene Turtle 0: Kirby’s Trey Stokely practically stole the show for Kirby’s with three interceptions including one returned 18-yards for a touchdown late in the game. Stokely also scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Bart Talbert, who also threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Murphy. Allen Hawk had an interception for the Turtle.
