Kathleen F. Jamison

OCEAN CITY – On Aug. 5, 2007, after a brief illness, Kathleen F. Jamison departed this life at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore.

Born on July 12, 1958, she was the daughter of Majorie Atkinson and the late LeRoy Jamison.

She is survived by her beloved friend, Steve Lattinville of Ocean City; a son, Kenny Atkinson of Baltimore; sisters, Sara Chandlers of Roanoke, Va. and Janet McConnell of San Antonio, Texas; and four nephews and five nieces.

Jamison moved to Ocean City in 1987 and worked in many places including The Kitchen Restaurant, Food Rite, Captain’s Pizza and Trader Lee’s, making friends wherever she went.

She had recently started playing the mandolin and enjoyed the music greatly. Everyone who knew “Kat” as someone who loved animals, especially her cats. She was an avid pool player and was known as a good shot. She enjoyed scented candles and mostly liked the odd ones.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. She will be missed by everyone her life touched.

Joseph “Joe” Reed

BERLIN – Joseph James “Joe” Reed died Aug. 15 at the Pontiac Medical Center after a five-month illness. He was 60 and lived in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

He was born in Syracuse, N.Y., March 15, 1947. He grew up in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., and was a 1965 graduate of Croton-Harmon High School. He was the eldest of six children of Philip and Ann (Kiggins) Reed of Ocean Pines, who survive him. He is also survived by his wife of 35 years, Janet (Nairin) Reed and their three children.

He attended the State University of New York at Oswego where he met his wife. They were married in Yonkers, N.Y., in 1972. He earned an Associate Arts degree from Westchester Community College and then earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing from the University of Hawaii.

He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. While serving there, he was wounded in action and awarded a Purple Heart.

After recovering, he left the Army and earned his two college degrees. He then joined the General Electric Company where he worked for 25 years in the company’s plastics division. While with GE, he and his family lived at various times in Massachusetts, Missouri and Ontario, Canada. After leaving GE 10 years ago, he worked as a sales representative in the plastics industry.

He was a friendly, outgoing individual who loved his family, his work and playing golf. His optimistic outlook served him well throughout his life and led him to form a group of colleagues at GE known as the Good Guy Association. The group met several times a year for camaraderie and, of course, to play golf.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by his three children, Alison of North Royalton, Ohio, Katie of Boston, Mass., and Brendan of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; a brother, Dan and his wife Cheri of Arnold; three sisters, Susan Rich and her husband Roy of Millwood, N.Y., Kathryn Ferrusi and her husband Ralph of Stormville, N.Y., and Sally DeOrio and her husband Vinnie of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Christine Reed.

Funeral services were held in Michigan on Aug. 18. Funeral arrangements were handled by A. J. Desmond & Sons of Troy, Mich.

Frances Magee Malleti

BERLIN – Frances "Buttercup" Magee Malleti, age 75, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2007 at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore City.

Born in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late Margaret Bradford Magee and Paul F. Magee of Berlin.

She is survived by her son, Steven Michael Hall and his wife Alexandra, of Berlin; two grandchildren, Alexander and Stephanie Hall; and many cousins and friends.

Malleti was preceded in death by her husband of many years George Malleti in 1998.

She graduated fro Southern Seminary and Junior College in Virginia in 1951. She was the owner of the Riviera Motel in Ocean City along with her first husband, Armand Hall. She had worked for many years at Mario’s Restaurant in Ocean City.

A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Berlin.

Donald Cropper

BERLIN – Donald Cropper, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Ocean City, he was the son of the late Lemuel and Ella May Cropper. Also preceding him in death was his first wife, Kathleen Jeanette Jones Cropper, in 1993.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Julia Ann Cropper; two sons, Daniel Earl Cropper and his wife Ella of Seaford, Del., and David Lee Cropper and his wife Harriet of Berlin; four stepchildren, Max Weygandt, Jr. of Ocala, Fla., Charlotte Weygandt of Delmar, Philip Weygandt and his wife Amy of Plantation, Fla. and Arden Weygandt and his wife Robin of Selybyville; two grandsons, Jimmy and Tyler Murray; nine step grandchildren, Timothy Weygandt and Shannon Weller of Willards, Thomas Weygandt of Plantation, Fla., Tabitha Walters and her husband Tom of Ocala, Fla., Jennifer Richart and her husband Jeff of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Julia Weygandt of Pasadena, Md., Barbara Kelly of Tennessee, Amanda, Felecia, and Kyle Weygandt all of Selbyville, Del.; seven step great grandchildren; and two nephews, Wilton May and his wife Betty of Ocean City and Lem Cropper, his wife JoAnn and their daughter Jenny of Ocean Pines. A sister, Maude C. Earl, preceded him in death in 1993.

Cropper was the owner of Cropper General Builders and Contractors. He had worked throughout his life in carpentry, construction and masonry. He was a WWII Coast Guard Veteran.

A graveside service was held at Evergreen Cemetery in Berlin.

Frederick W. Brennan

BERLIN – Frederick William Brennan, "Fred", age 84, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2007 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Providence, R.I., he was the son of the late John Frederick Brennan and Catherine McCusker Brennan. He is survived by his wife, Rita Marie Torpey Brennan; six children, John "Jack" Brennan and his wife Dawn of Toronto Canada, Joe Brennan and his partner Danny Greenglass of Toronto, Jim Brennan and his wife Cheryl of Frederick, Md., Tom Brennan of Manassas, Va., Karen Higgins and her husband Joe of Laurel, Md., and Carol Ann Troen and her husband Dave of Silver Spring, Md. There are 19 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A twin brother Frank Brennan preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister-in-law Myrna Brennan. There are several nieces and nephews.

Brennan was a graduate of Hope Street High School in Providence, R.I. He was a computer administrator with the United States Government in the General Services Administration. He was a WWII Navy Veteran, member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, a church usher, member of the American Legion in Silver Spring, Holy Name Society of Silver Spring and the Friends of St. Camillus Parish in Silver Spring.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday at St. Luke Catholic Church at 100th St. and Coastal Hwy in Ocean City, Rev. Thomas Protack officiated.

A graveside service was held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring. Donations may be made to the Sisters Academy of Baltimore, 146 2nd Ave., Baltimore, Md. 21227. Eloise June Sperian

BERLIN – On Aug. 17, 2007 Eloise June Speiran died.

She was the beloved wife of the late Harold G. Speiran, devoted mother of Lewis W. Speiran and his wife Teresa, Gary K. Speiran and his wife Cheryl and Kathy S. Kelchner and her husband Jeffrey. She was the adored grandmother of Arlaina, Aundrea and her husband Dana, Kimberly, Kelly, Adam and his wife Jennifer, Greg and Ryan. She was the great grandmother of Michael, Jesse, Justice and Lauren. She is also survived by by nieces, nephews and a host of friends and staff of Catered Living.

She was predeceased by her brother, Leslie Klino.

Funeral services were held at the Wilson United Methodist Church on Bishopville Road in Bishopville, from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday where funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Makamie Cemetery in Snow Hill.

John Robert Gamble

BERLIN – John "Jack" Gamble, age 95, died in his sleep of heart failure on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007.

A pioneer resident of Ocean Pines, originally from Chester, Pa., he was lucky to start work as a messenger at the Sun Oil Company in Marcus Hook, Pa. in 1929 just before the stock market crashed. He remained with Sunoco for 33 years and retired as a foreman of engineers. He then owned the popular Surrey Restaurant in Wilmington, Del., where he was able to indulge his love of Dixieland Jazz with weekly live bands. His other passions included photography, extensive traveling to Europe and the Caribbean, weekly Friday night dinners with friends at the Ocean Pines Yacht Club and Saturday trips to Wilson’s Auctions.

Gamble is survived by his nieces, Sherry Gamble of Ocean Pines and Patricia Henson of Florida, and a nephew, Michael Burns of Bishopville and Michael’s children and grandchildren,

A private memorial will be held by friends and family who loved him dearly at a later date.

Marcella Cropper Coakley

BERLIN – Marcella Cropper Coakley died peacefully at home on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007 after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was surrounded by her loving family.

She was born April 3, 1918 in Ocean City and spent her last years in California to be close to her daughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Henrietta Adams Cropper; two sisters, Marietta Johnson Nolan and Evelyn Dypsky; husbands, Henry William Parker, Franklin B. Hill, Jr. and Forest Coakley.

She is survived by her daughter, Louise Parker King; granddaughters, Crystal Steiner and husband Marc and Tara Ekbatani and husband Ari; great grandchildren, Ashley and Brand Ekbatani; sisters, Bessie Hopkinsof Annapolis, Violete “Pete” Steger and Sally (Russell) Bradford of Ocean City, Charlotte Bergey of Milford, Francis (Dr. Tim) Roberts of Charlotte, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, great grandnieces, great grandnephews and dear friends.

She was dearly loved by her family and those whose lives she touched along her journey. She will be greatly missed.

The family wishes to give special thanks to her loving caregivers, Lita, Sonny and Cathy and to Joyce and Colleen of Trinity Care Hospice for their love and support.
