Two Del. Inmates Caught Near School

SHOWELL – Two Delaware prison inmates working on a road crew near Selbyville on Wednesday afternoon escaped and fled on foot before being caught near Showell Elementary in Worcester County.

Christopher Womach, 27, and Dontay Johnson, 20, both inmates with the Delaware Department of Corrections, were working on a road crew near Selbyville on Wednesday morning picking up trash along Polly Branch Road. Around 11:40 a.m., Womach and Johnson made a sudden run for it and disappeared into some nearby woods.

Their attempted escape was witnessed by a Delaware Department of Corrections officer who was supervising the road crew and a search was immediately initiated. Johnson and Womach were on the lam for a little over an hour as Department of Corrections officers were joined by the Delaware State Police in the search.

The search continued throughout the area before Womach and Johnson were found shortly after 1 p.m. in hiding near Showell Elementary. The two inmates were taken into custody and returned to the Delaware Department of Corrections and face escape charges.
