Police Arrest Two In Store Robberies

WEST OCEAN CITY – A combined effort by several local law enforcement agencies last Saturday resulted in the arrest of two people suspected of robbing Candy Kitchen stores in West Ocean City and Fenwick Island.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m. last Saturday, deputies from the Worcester County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the Candy Kitchen at the White Marlin Mall in West Ocean City for a report of an attempted armed robbery. During the robbery attempt, the male suspect, later identified as Derrick Johnson, 22, of Seaford, Del., displayed a handgun on the waistband of his pants before fleeing the scene with a female suspect.

While en route to the incident, a Maryland State Police trooper observed a vehicle matching the description of the getaway car heading west on Route 50 about five miles from the incident. The trooper circled around and began following the suspected vehicle, which weaved in and out of traffic in an apparent attempt to elude the trooper.

The trooper eventually caught up to the suspect as it turned right onto Route 589. The vehicle stopped briefly then sped away again before eventually stopping in front of Ocean Downs racetrack. The driver was identified as Shyneka Dyshell Taylor, 20, of Stockton, while Johnson was discovered in the front passenger seat.

During the pursuit, local law enforcement agencies learned the Delaware State Police were investigating an armed robbery at the Candy Kitchen in Fenwick Island that occurred about an hour before the attempted armed robbery in West Ocean City. Officers at the vehicle stopped on Route 589 then discovered a stolen bank bag in the passenger compartment. It was later learned the female suspect, Taylor, was an employee of the Candy Kitchen in West Ocean City.

Detectives assigned to the Worcester County Bureau of Investigation are assisting the Maryland State Police and the Delaware State Police in the investigation.
