Sister Mary Lanahan

BERLIN – Sister Mary Lanahan (Margaret William), SND died at Peninsula Regional Medical Center on May 23, 2007 from congestive heart failure.

She was 73 years of age and had lived 55 of her years in the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. At the time of her death, Mary-by-the-Sea, (as she and her friends came to know her) had become well known after almost 10 years of living and ministering in Ocean City.

Born in Upper Darby, Pa. of Vivien and William Lanahan, Mary eventually was sister to four brothers. She graduated from Notre Dame High School in Moylan, Pa. in 1951 and the following year entered the Sisters of Notre Dame. She began her teaching career in 1954 as a primary teacher at Maryvale, in Brooklandville, Md. After 22 years with young children in schools from Staten Island and Queens Village, N.Y., Huntingdon Valley, Pa. and Trinity School in Ellicott City, Md., Mary returned to Maryvale, this time as Plant Manager

Always a lover of the sea, she moved to Ocean City in 1998 where, in her “retirement,” she managed “rentals” of her brother’s condominium during the summer season. Mary was active in St. Luke Parish as Eucharistic Minister. She also tutored children in whatever subjects they needed, prepared children to receive the sacraments, gave piano lessons to children and adults and did various odd jobs so that she could continue making a financial contribution “to my Sisters.”

Five years ago, Mary felt drawn to share her life with women she knew were seeking a deeper relationship with God. The group has grown to 16 women who meet regularly to share their faith journey. Several of them have become Associates of the Sisters of Notre Dame. In a recent conversation Mary explained her life this way: “I try to deepen an inner peace in myself so I can reach out to people’s needs. I feel I am freelancing for the Lord! And wherever God’s people are, I feel I am doing God’s work.”

In addition to her brothers James, Joseph and Richard and many nieces, nephews and their children, Mary is survived by the Sisters of Notre Dame with whom she has shared life over 55 years.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. June 22 at St. Luke Catholic Church in Ocean City and on June 23 at Villa Julie Residence in Stevenson, Md. Mary asked that donations in her memory be sent to Sisters of Notre Dame, African Missions, 305 Cable Street, Baltimore 21210.
