Decatur Thumps Bennett, Kent Island to Improve to 6-0

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girl’s varsity lacrosse team
remained unbeaten this week after thrashing visiting Bennett, 20-3, in a
windswept game on Monday and followed that up with a resounding 10-4 win over
Kent Island on the road on Tuesday.

The Seahawks, now 6-0 on the season, dismantled the
visiting Clippers on Monday in the remnants of the Nor’easter that swept
through the area last weekend. A cold, damp wind blew steadily out of the west
for the entire game and a steady drizzle fell with temperatures dipping into
the 40s, but the adverse conditions did little to slow down the Decatur
offensive juggernaut.

Decatur jumped out to an early three-goal lead just five
minutes into the first half and never looked back. The Seahawks were especially
impressive during a five-minute span in the first half when they steadily
pulled away from the Clippers. Amy Buckley got the roll started with a goal at
the 16:41 mark in the first half and added another just 30 seconds later to
extend the Seahawk lead to 5-0.

Katie Remmell scored another goal for Decatur with 14:36
remaining in the first half to extend the lead to 6-0 and Katie Priestly added
another on a direct penalty shot about one minute later to extend the lead to
7-0. Alex Engh finished the whirlwind stretch with a goal at the 12:16 mark to
stake the Seahawks to an 8-0 lead.

Bennett finally got on the board with a goal on a direct
penalty shot by Maggie Sullivan at the 11:01 mark to cut the lead to 8-1, but
Decatur got the offense cranked up again and finished the first half strong.
Kara Gover got Decatur rolling again with a fast-break goal with just over 10
minutes remaining in the first half to extend the lead to 9-1.

Olivia Turner got in the act for Decatur with a goal on a
perfect feed on the crease with 8:28 remaining in the first half to push the
lead to 10-1, and Amy Buckley scored again two minutes later to make it 11-1.
Sara Braniecki then scored on a direct penalty shot to make it 12-1.

Bennett got one back on a penalty shot of its own by Jody
Schesler to make it 12-2 with time running down in the first half, but
Decatur’s Emily Smith got the Seahawks last goal during the first-half to push
the lead to 13-2 at the intermission. With the big lead and the weather
steadily deteriorating, Decatur Coach Bob Musitano cleared his bench for much
of the second half as the Seahawks cruised to the decisive 20-3 win.

Katie Blazer and Amy Buckley led the Decatur scoring with
three goals apiece, while Ali Lathroum scored two goals and dished out six
assists.

The win over Bennett on Monday was sandwiched between a
big run of three straight for the Seahawks. Last Friday, Decatur thumped old
rival Easton, 19-5, and topped Kent Island, 10-4, on the road on Tuesday. Gover
led the Seahawks in the Kent Island game with three goals and an assist, while
Lathroum pitched in two goals and an assist.

The
Seahawks’ record now stands at 6-0 and they sit alone atop the Bayside
Conference south division standings with Parkside at 7-1 lurking close behind.
